Data that “cannot be lost” calls for a measurable recovery plan, not a promise that failure is impossible. Set business-approved recovery point and recovery time objectives (RPO and RTO), then combine durable storage, replication, protected backups, and tested restore procedures to meet them.
Turn “cannot be lost” into recovery objectives
Start with the people who own the business impact of losing data or taking a service offline. Ask how much recent data the organization can afford to lose and how long it can tolerate the service being unavailable. Record those answers as objectives for each workload or data class.
- Recovery point objective (RPO): the maximum tolerable data loss, usually expressed as the age of the latest recovery point that would be acceptable.
- Recovery time objective (RTO): the maximum tolerable downtime before the service must be usable again.
These are distinct targets: a system may recover quickly but from an older copy, or preserve a recent copy while taking longer to restore service. Microsoft defines RPO and RTO in these terms and notes that pursuing zero for both can be difficult and costly in practice: Microsoft Learn: What are Business Continuity, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery?
Use persistence, replication, and backup for different jobs
Database persistence and storage behavior determine how committed writes survive ordinary failures. Replication keeps copies on other systems or locations to support availability and resilience. A backup preserves a point-in-time recovery copy. None of these mechanisms should be treated as interchangeable.

- High-capacity external hard drive with up to 2TB of storage The ModusTech Facet portable external hard drive gives you dependable HDD storage in a slim 2.5-inch design. Multiple capacities available up to 2TB — back up photos, videos, music, documents, and game libraries with room to grow. A trusted external storage solution for everyday backup, media archives, and creative work.
- USB-C and USB 3.1 connectivity with included 2-in-1 cable The Facet ships with a USB-C to USB-C cable and tethered USB-A adapter, so this external hard drive connects to modern laptops, USB-C iPhones, tablets, and older USB-A computers without buying an extra cable. USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) interface delivers real-world transfer speeds up to 100MB/s — fast enough to back up 50GB of files in about 8 minutes.
- Plug-and-play external hard drive for PC, Mac, and laptops Preformatted in exFAT and ready to use the moment you plug it in. The Facet works out of the box with Windows PCs, macOS Macs, MacBooks, Chromebooks, and laptops — no drivers, no software, no setup required. A true plug-and-play external hard drive built for everyday use across every major operating system.
- External hard drive for PS4, Xbox One, and Smart TV gaming The Facet is compatible with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Smart TVs with USB support. PS4 and Xbox One games run directly from the drive — plug it in, format through the console, and add to your storage. Also works with Smart TVs that support USB recording or external media playback.
- Slim, shock-resistant portable external hard drive — 160g At 2.5 inches and just 160g, this portable external hard drive is bus-powered through a single USB-C cable — no separate power adapter, no extra cables. Slim enough for a laptop bag, jacket pocket, or camera bag, with a shockresistant casing and faceted diamond-texture top panel that resists fingerprints and everyday wear. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty from ModusTech, a consumer electronics brand specializing in external storage.
- Replication is not a backup. It can help when a server or location becomes unavailable, but a deletion or corruption may be propagated to replicas.
- A backup is not necessarily current. Restoring a point-in-time copy may omit changes made after that recovery point.
- Use both where the risks require it. Replication can reduce disruption from infrastructure loss; historical backups can provide a way back before accidental or malicious changes.
Microsoft describes replication and backup as complementary protections and recommends regularly testing and verifying backup and restore processes: Redundancy, replication, and backup.
Choose a recovery pattern against your objectives
Recovery designs trade standing capacity and operating complexity for readiness. AWS describes the following patterns as generally moving toward lower RTO and RPO as cost and complexity rise; those are architectural tradeoffs, not guarantees for every application or service.

| Pattern | What is prepared before an incident | Tradeoff to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Backup and restore | Backups and documented or automated steps to restore infrastructure and data. | Requires recovery work after the event; establish whether restore time and recovery-point age satisfy the objectives. |
| Pilot light | Core components or data are kept ready, while other resources are started or scaled during recovery. | Less standing capacity than a fully running standby, but incident-time provisioning and coordination affect recovery. |
| Warm standby | A reduced-capacity but functional environment is maintained and can be scaled up. | More readiness and standing cost than pilot light; scaling and failover still need to be planned and exercised. |
| Multi-region active-active | Workloads operate in multiple regions concurrently. | Highest coordination demands among these patterns; concurrent writes can create conflicts that the application must resolve. |
Compare each candidate using achievable RPO and RTO, pre-incident capacity and cost, operational complexity, and the failures it covers. Include recovery from accidental deletion, corruption, and malicious destruction—not just infrastructure loss. AWS cautions that replication alone does not provide point-in-time recovery from corruption or destruction, and that active-active systems must account for concurrent-write conflicts. See AWS Well-Architected Framework: Use defined recovery strategies to meet the recovery objectives and AWS Well-Architected Reliability Pillar: Back up data.
Make the recovery path complete and protected
A recovery plan is only as useful as the assets and instructions it can reach. Inventory the data, applications, configuration, and dependencies needed to restore the workload. For each item, decide whether it must be backed up or can reliably be reproduced, and include that assumption in the recovery procedure.

- Automate backup capture so it does not depend on an operator remembering to run it.
- Encrypt backups and restrict access to the people and systems that need it.
- Where malicious deletion or ransomware is in scope, consider immutable backup storage and logical separation from production credentials and systems.
- Document how to locate backups, restore data and services, and validate that the recovered workload is usable.
AWS recommends identifying required data, securing and automating backups, and periodically recovering them to verify integrity and process: Back up data. Google Cloud describes backup and recovery capabilities, including immutable WORM backup vaults, in its Backup and DR overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test restores and report what they prove
A successful backup job shows that a capture process reported success; it does not demonstrate that the data can be restored into a working service within the business’s RTO. Schedule recovery exercises that use the real recovery path, verify the restored data and application, and measure the elapsed time and recovery point achieved.

- Select a workload and the recovery scenario being tested, such as loss of infrastructure or recovery from an unwanted change.
- Follow the documented procedure using the intended backups, access controls, configuration, and dependencies.
- Validate that the data is consistent enough for the workload and that the service can perform its required tasks.
- Record the actual recovery point, time to usable service, failures, manual steps, and any assumptions that proved false.
- Update the design and procedure, then share measured results and unresolved failure modes with the stakeholders who approved the objectives.
Microsoft says backup and restore processes should be tested and verified regularly, alongside other recovery steps; AWS likewise recommends periodic recovery to verify backup integrity and processes. A design is credible when exercises show whether its objectives are met—and make gaps visible when they are not.
