To activate Bixby on a supported Galaxy device, press and hold the Side or Bixby button, then follow the setup prompts. You may need to sign in to your Samsung account. To use Bixby hands-free, enable Voice wake-up and register a wake-up phrase in Bixby settings. The available options depend on your device, software, region, and language.
Check whether your Galaxy supports Bixby Voice
Bixby features are not available on every Samsung device, and compatibility can vary by model and market. Samsung’s US support list includes Galaxy S8 through S25 series phones, Note8 through Note20 series phones, Z Fold and Z Flip devices, and certain A-series models. Samsung says its supported list can expand and that some A-series models are not available in the US. Check Samsung’s Bixby general questions and information for its US overview.
For the A series, Samsung specifically lists the A35, A36 5G, A50, A51, A52 5G, A53 5G, A54 5G, A56 5G, and A71 for Bixby Voice. This is not a guarantee that every Bixby feature works on every listed device. See Samsung’s A-series Bixby guide and check your exact model’s support information if a menu or feature is missing.
Activate Bixby for the first time
- Open Bixby. Press and hold the Side or Bixby button. Alternatively, open the Bixby app, which may be in the Samsung folder.
- Sign in if prompted. Use your Samsung account to continue when the setup asks you to sign in.
- Complete the guided setup. Tap Start, review the prompts, tap Continue where shown, and follow the remaining on-screen instructions.
The exact screens may differ across devices and software versions. Samsung’s Bixby setup instructions cover launching Bixby with a button or the app and completing initial setup.

Turn on hands-free “Hi, Bixby” activation
Hands-free wake-up is optional; it is separate from opening Bixby with a button or app. Once Bixby is set up, use one of these routes to its settings:
- Open Bixby and ask it to open Bixby Settings, if voice interaction is available.
- On some devices, go to Settings > Advanced features > Bixby.
In Bixby settings, tap Voice registration, choose a wake-up command such as “Hi, Bixby” if offered, and follow the prompts to register your voice. Samsung Canada’s Bixby setup and use guide, last updated September 17, 2026, describes voice registration and wake-up phrase selection. Labels and paths may differ by model, region, and software.

Adjust Voice wake-up options
Depending on the device and software, the Voice wake-up menu may include controls such as:
- Sensitivity: Low, Medium, or High, to adjust how readily Bixby responds to your voice.
- Wake-up phrase: A choice between “Hi, Bixby” and “Bixby,” where both are available.
- Voice-specific response: An option to tailor responses to the registered voice.
- Wake-up during media playback: A setting that may let Bixby listen while media is playing.
- Voice recordings: An option to delete registered voice recordings.
These controls are not universal. Samsung’s Voice wake-up instructions explain the settings available on supported devices.

If the Side button does not open Bixby
The Side button can be assigned to another action, including opening the power menu. Check Settings > Advanced features > Side key and look for the press-and-hold assignment. If Bixby is offered, select it. Menu names and choices vary, so follow the options shown on your device. Samsung also recommends opening the Bixby app when the Side button is assigned to the Power menu; see its setup guide. Samsung’s older Side Key customization guide corroborates that assignments can be changed, but your current on-device menu is the relevant guide for your software.
If Bixby Voice setup or wake-up is unavailable
- Check connectivity: Samsung says Bixby Voice requires Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Check your Samsung account: Sign in if prompted during setup.
- Check the activity or device mode: Voice may be limited while recording, during a call, while docked in Samsung DeX, or when Power saving, Emergency, or Kids mode is active.
- Check model and regional support: A Galaxy device may support some Bixby features but not Voice wake-up, or a particular feature may not be offered in your region, language, or software version.
- Look for the setting on the device: If a documented path is absent, consult Samsung support for your exact model rather than assuming the feature is available.

What you can ask Bixby to do
On supported devices and in supported regions and languages, Samsung gives examples such as creating reminders, opening apps, sending messages, making calls, controlling device features, setting alarms, playing media, and finding content on the device.
