JFFS2 is a Linux filesystem designed for embedded systems that use raw flash storage. It writes filesystem nodes directly to flash through the Memory Technology Device (MTD) layer: updates append new nodes, old nodes become obsolete, and garbage collection frees space by moving live data and erasing blocks. This design avoids treating raw flash like an ordinary hard drive, but it means mounting requires scanning the medium and rebuilding filesystem indexing information in memory.

What is JFFS2?

JFFS2, short for Journaling Flash File System version 2, is a log-structured filesystem for embedded raw flash. It operates in the Linux MTD context rather than putting a conventional filesystem on a simulated block device. The JFFS2 project overview describes it as placing the filesystem directly on flash and supporting compression.

Raw flash has erase and write constraints that differ from ordinary disks. JFFS2 is designed around those constraints: filesystem data and metadata are represented as nodes written into flash erase blocks, rather than by repeatedly overwriting a fixed location as if the medium were a hard drive.

The project page credits Red Hat with developing JFFS2 based on work begun by Axis Communications, and says it was included in the official Linux kernel beginning with release 2.4.10. That is historical context, not a statement about current support for any particular kernel or device. David Woodhouse’s original technical paper, dated 2001-10-10, discusses the design constraints of flash filesystems and the move toward filesystems that understand flash directly: JFFS technical paper and project documentation.

How does JFFS2 work?

Updates append new nodes

JFFS2 writes nodes sequentially into erase blocks. Each block is handled independently, and nodes do not cross erase-block boundaries. When file data or metadata changes, JFFS2 writes new nodes that supersede the older information. The previous nodes remain on flash but are marked obsolete rather than overwritten in place. The project’s description of JFFS2 operation and on-media design explains this node-based layout.

Garbage collection reclaims blocks

To make space available again, JFFS2 garbage collection selects blocks, copies any still-live nodes that need to be retained, then erases blocks containing obsolete nodes. It tends to reclaim dirty blocks and periodically collects clean blocks as well, moving their live data to help distribute wear. This is a wear-management strategy, not a promise that every block on a given device will wear evenly.

Mounting reconstructs an in-memory index

When mounting, JFFS2 scans the flash, checks node CRCs, and reconstructs the indexing information it needs in memory. It does not rely on a persistent on-flash index in the way UBIFS does. As the filesystem grows, the scan and the memory used for indexing grow with the amount of flash; this is the main architectural trade-off behind JFFS2’s mount behavior.

What is JFFS2 used for?

JFFS2 is intended for Linux systems built around raw flash, especially embedded systems where the filesystem can work directly with the flash device through MTD. Its design is relevant when the storage is not presented as an ordinary block device and the filesystem must account for erase blocks and flash write behavior.

JFFS2 is not a universal choice for every flash device. Whether it is suitable depends on the flash type and geometry, NAND page-write rules where applicable, the Linux kernel configuration, and the behavior of the MTD driver for the target. The available documentation does not provide a current compatibility matrix for a specific device, so device-level selection requires checking the target’s own specifications and software stack.

JFFS2 vs UBIFS: what is the difference?

JFFS2 and UBIFS both address flash-specific storage, but they sit on different device stacks and handle indexing differently. The Linux kernel’s UBIFS documentation compares their architecture and scaling:

Aspect JFFS2 UBIFS
Device stack Works on MTD devices. Works on UBI volumes.
Index location Rebuilds indexing information in memory during a scan of the medium. Maintains indexing information on flash.
Mount behavior Mount time and memory consumption scale linearly with flash size. Does not need the same full-media scan; the kernel documentation says it mounts many times faster than JFFS2.
Scaling Mount time and memory use scale linearly with flash size. UBIFS data structures scale logarithmically, but UBI scales linearly, so the complete UBI/UBIFS stack still scales linearly while scaling better than JFFS2.

These are architectural comparisons, not a portable benchmark or a guarantee of a specific mount time on a particular board. To choose between them, establish the target flash type and size, kernel support, and requirements for mount behavior and memory use; the comparison alone cannot determine the right filesystem for an unspecified device.

Does JFFS2 work with NAND flash?

JFFS2 is described as NAND-aware in the Linux 4.18 NAND driver documentation. That documentation also warns that NAND devices can limit how many times a page may be written before erase, with the applicable limit depending on the manufacturer’s specifications. See the Linux 4.18 NAND driver documentation for that version’s guidance.

For an actual NAND target, check the manufacturer’s datasheet, the documentation for the current kernel’s MTD driver, and the behavior of the specific device and driver together. The Linux 4.18 statement establishes that JFFS2 is NAND-aware in that documentation; it is not a compatibility guarantee for every NAND part or a current device-by-device support matrix.

Why does JFFS2 take a long time to mount?

JFFS2 has to inspect the flash contents at mount time, validate node CRCs, and rebuild the in-memory index. Because the scan and indexing work scale linearly with flash size, mounting can take longer as the medium grows. The same design also makes memory consumption grow with flash size.

UBIFS addresses this particular trade-off by keeping indexing information on flash, avoiding the same full scan and mounting many times faster according to the kernel documentation. However, UBIFS runs on UBI volumes, and the complete UBI/UBIFS stack still scales linearly because UBI scales linearly. Neither description supplies a universal time figure: actual behavior depends on the target system and its flash.
