You can project directly onto a plain wall without a separate screen. Set the projector level and square to the wall, use the model’s distance guidance to size the image, focus it, then make only small geometry corrections if needed.
What you need before you start
- A projector and the picture source you want to display.
- A clear, flat wall area—or, if available, a pre-installed whiteboard. A separate projection screen is optional; Epson lists a plain wall as a possible projection surface: Epson projector positioning guide.
- The projector’s manual or manufacturer distance chart. Image size and usable placement range depend on the particular model.
Set up the projector and picture
- Clear the projection area. Choose a flat section of wall with enough space for the image you want. A universal wall paint color or finish recommendation is not established by the cited setup guidance.
- Place and square the projector. Set it on a sturdy, level surface and aim the lens at a right angle to the wall. Correct physical alignment first; aiming at an angle can distort the picture. LG gives the same right-angle placement instruction in its projector installation guide.
- Choose the distance for your model. Check the manual or manufacturer distance chart for the target image size and supported range. The lens-to-wall distance affects image size, but the relationship differs between projectors. See LG’s installation guidance, Philips’s picture-size guidance and Sony’s distance guidance.
- Adjust the image size. If your projector has optical zoom, use its zoom control. If not, move the projector closer to make the image smaller or farther away to make it larger, staying within its specified range. Philips describes changing the distance to adjust picture size: Philips picture-size guidance.
- Focus the picture. Once the projector is in position and the size is set, use its focus control or focus knob to sharpen the image. Philips’s guidance describes using the focus knob: Philips picture-size guidance.
- Connect your picture source. Use an input supported by your projector, then select that input. Connection methods vary by device, so follow the projector and source-device manuals.
- Use keystone correction only if needed. Physical leveling and squaring should come first. Keystone can make a skewed image rectangular, but increasing correction can reduce picture quality, and the available controls vary by model. See LG’s installation guidance.
How far should a projector be from the wall?
Use the distance chart or throw ratio for your exact projector; there is no single distance that works for every model. For example, Sony’s guidance for the mobile projector it discusses uses an 8-foot-wide image and a 1.3 throw ratio: 8 × 1.3 = 10.4 feet from the projector to the wall or screen. That 1.3 ratio is specific to that product guidance, not a general setting: Sony’s distance example.
Philips gives a different model-specific example for the NeoPix Easy/Easy+: a projection distance of 80–200 cm and a relationship of 1.2 times the screen width. Treat those figures as applying to those models, not as universal projector specifications: Philips NeoPix Easy/Easy+ guidance.

How to fix a skewed or blurry projection
If the image looks slanted or uneven
- Level the projector and aim the lens squarely at the wall before changing settings.
- If the image remains skewed, use the keystone control if your model has one. Keep the correction modest, since more correction can reduce image quality.
If the picture is blurry
- After positioning and sizing the image, adjust the focus control.
- Check focus again if you move the projector or change zoom, since the final position and size should be set before focusing.
If the picture is too large or too small
- Use optical zoom if the projector provides it.
- Otherwise, change the lens-to-wall distance within the model’s supported range, then focus again.
What to check when choosing a projector for your room
Before setting up or buying a projector, compare the available lens-to-wall distance with the model’s throw range and your desired image width. Also check whether it has optical zoom, a focus control and the keystone adjustments you may need. A screen is a surface option if your wall is unsuitable, not a universal requirement; Epson’s positioning guide permits a plain wall: Epson projector positioning guide.
