If Windows 11 signs in but leaves you with a black screen, start with reversible display checks. If you can reach Task Manager, restart Windows Explorer; if the desktop still will not appear, use Windows Recovery Environment and Safe Mode to investigate the display driver or a recent system change. A black screen can have several causes, so work through the steps in order rather than assuming the driver is at fault.
Check the display and graphics connection first
A blank screen after sign-in can be related to display output being sent to the wrong screen, a display connection, a stalled Windows process, a driver, or a user profile. Those are possible explanations—not a diagnosis of your PC. Begin with checks that do not change files or settings.
- Confirm the PC is powered on and the monitor is on, connected, and set to the correct input. If you are using a laptop with an external monitor or other peripherals, disconnect them temporarily and check the built-in display.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief screen flicker may indicate that the reset worked.
- Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle display modes. Pause briefly between attempts to see whether the desktop appears on the current screen.
Microsoft describes these checks in its Windows blank-screen troubleshooting guide.
Restart Windows Explorer if Windows responds
If a cursor is visible or the security screen opens, Windows may be running even though its desktop shell has not appeared. Restarting Windows Explorer can restore the taskbar and desktop.

- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, choose Task Manager. If a cursor is visible, you can also try Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly.
- In Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, select it, and choose Restart. The screen may briefly flicker while the shell reloads.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
These Task Manager and Explorer steps are part of Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance.
Use Safe Mode to narrow down the cause
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the black screen does not occur there, that is a useful clue that something loaded during a normal start may be involved; it does not identify one specific cause.

Open Recovery Environment from the sign-in screen
- At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- In Windows Recovery Environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts to Startup Settings, press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
Microsoft also documents the sign-in route in its instructions for starting a PC in Safe Mode.

Enter Recovery Environment if the sign-in screen is unavailable
Microsoft’s blank-screen instructions describe forcing Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup: hold the power button for about 10 seconds to shut down, then repeat the interrupted-start sequence two or three times. This is a way to reach recovery when normal Windows access is unavailable, not a routine shutdown method. Once Recovery Environment opens, follow the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart path and press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. See Microsoft’s blank-screen steps and Startup Settings overview.

Sign in and interpret what Safe Mode shows
Use your account password to sign in to Safe Mode. Your PIN and biometric sign-in methods are unavailable there, according to Microsoft’s Safe Mode sign-in instructions. Startup Settings also includes Enable low-resolution video, which uses the current video driver at a lower resolution and refresh rate; it can help when display settings are the issue.
Update or roll back the display driver
Choose the driver action based on when the problem began. If the black screen started directly after a graphics-driver update, try rolling that update back. If there was no recent driver update, updating the driver may be appropriate.

- In Safe Mode, right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics adapter, and open Properties.
- On the Driver tab, choose Roll Back Driver if the issue followed an update. Windows may not offer this option if there is no previous driver available.
- If rollback does not apply and the problem did not begin after an update, use Device Manager’s driver update option or check the PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer for the appropriate driver.
- Restart normally and check whether the original black screen returns.
Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance recommends matching rollback or update to the timing of the problem; the relevant driver option may vary by device.
Consider recovery only after lower-impact checks
If the problem began recently and the display checks, Explorer restart, and driver steps have not helped, System Restore to a restore point from before the problem began is one option in Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. Back up important files first if you can: Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss. Avoid jumping straight to Reset this PC before trying the less disruptive diagnostics above.
Use stop-code troubleshooting for a crash screen
A blank screen with no error message is different from a screen that displays a stop code or says Windows ran into a problem and must restart. If you see a code, follow Microsoft’s stop-code and unexpected-restart guidance instead. The stop code and, when available, a named module can help identify the failure.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step by what you can see
| What you observe | Next step |
|---|---|
| Cursor or Task Manager is available | Restart Windows Explorer or run explorer.exe. |
| The problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update | Use Safe Mode and try Roll Back Driver. |
| The screen remains blank and ordinary Windows controls are inaccessible | Open Windows Recovery Environment and start Safe Mode. |
| You suspect output is going to another monitor | Disconnect external displays temporarily and cycle display modes with Windows + P. |
| A stop code or restart error is displayed | Use stop-code troubleshooting rather than the blank-screen sequence. |
| The issue followed a recent system change and other checks fail | Consider System Restore, taking the backup and recovery risks into account. |
