If your Android phone says storage is full, open Settings > Storage and check which categories are taking up space. Then review photos and videos, apps and app data, and downloads or offline media. These are useful places to look, not a universal ranking: the biggest space users depend on what is stored on your phone.
Start by checking Android storage
Storage is the space used to keep items such as photos and music; it is different from memory used to run programs. On most phones, start at Settings > Storage. The exact path and category names can vary by Android version and manufacturer, so look in Settings for “Storage” if you do not see that path. Your phone’s breakdown is the best guide to what to review first. Google’s Android storage guide describes ways to review and free device space.
Google warns that a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat that as a warning sign from Google’s support guidance, not a guarantee that every phone will behave the same way. Google’s guidance on speeding up a slow Android device includes the warning.

Photos and videos can occupy local phone storage. If you use Google Photos, check that backup has finished for the items you want to keep before removing their device copies. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture and check the backup status. Do not use “Free up space on this device” until the photos and videos you intend to remove are backed up.

Remove backed-up copies from the phone
- Open Google Photos and confirm the relevant items show as backed up.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Free up space on this device.
- Review the prompt and confirm only if you are ready to remove the local copies.
The action removes copies stored on the phone, not the backed-up items in your Google Photos account. Those backed-up items remain accessible in Google Photos and at photos.google.com when you are signed in and online. A removed local copy may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery or be available offline. Google notes that photos and videos fewer than 30 days old may remain on the device. See Google Photos’ instructions for freeing space.
Review before deleting
Google Photos’ storage-management tools may surface blurry photos, screenshots, and large videos for review. Treat these as candidates, not automatic deletions: check each item before removing it. If you have a phone with an SD card slot, you may be able to store or move photos to a microSD card; not every Android phone supports one. Google’s Gallery help shows the SD-card option for compatible devices.

Look through installed apps and remove ones you no longer use. Some devices also offer automatic app archiving. When available, archiving removes apps you do not use often while keeping their personal app data and leaving the app icon on the device. You can download an archived app again if it is still available on Google Play. Availability and menu labels vary by device.

- Clear cache: removes temporary data. The app may load more slowly the next time while it rebuilds that data.
- Clear storage: permanently deletes all data for that app. This may remove settings, saved information, and downloads stored by the app.
Before clearing storage, check the app’s own settings for downloads or other data you can remove selectively. Avoid clearing an app’s storage as a blanket cleanup step. Google explains these options in its Android storage guidance.

3. Downloads and offline media
Downloaded films, music, and other offline content may remain on the phone after you have finished with it. Remove media from the app that downloaded it: for example, Google TV and YouTube Music provide controls for managing downloaded content. For another service, look in that app’s downloads or offline-content section.
For ordinary downloaded files, open your phone’s file manager, review the Downloads folder, and delete only files you no longer need. If you want to keep files but remove them from the phone, connect it to a computer with a USB cable, copy the relevant files and folders, verify the copies, and then remove the phone copies if you no longer need local access. What more cloud storage can—and cannot—do
More Google Account storage can help with backups and cloud content if your account is full, but it does not increase your phone’s internal storage. To reclaim local space, you still need to remove local files or app data, move files to compatible external storage, or use an app’s controls to delete offline downloads. Google One describes Google Account storage options.
