To change a Codex plan without asking the model to rewrite it, save the plan as a file and edit that copy yourself. If you want Codex to rethink or revise the plan, ask it to do so instead. OpenAI Support described these as the available workarounds in a September 8, 2026 reply; its sources do not establish that changes to a saved file automatically update the plan in an active Codex session.
Choose how you want to change the plan

Edit a saved copy yourself
- Save or copy the plan into a file you can edit.
- Make your wording and structure changes in that file.
- Keep the edited file available as you continue. Do not assume your changes have been applied to the active Plan-mode document; the cited sources do not establish an automatic update or describe a re-import procedure.
OpenAI Support gave this workaround in its September 8, 2026 reply in the OpenAI Developer Community. Support also said it had no timeline to share for a directly editable Plan-mode document. That statement describes the reply on that date; it does not establish the status of every Codex client or version today.
Why the plan may not act like an editable document
The official Codex plan-mode template describes planning as a conversational process and presents the proposed plan in a <proposed_plan> block. That helps explain the format, but it does not document every Codex interface or prove that no client has an in-place editing control. The template also does not describe synchronization between a saved file and an active session.
