As of April 2026, an estimated 5.79 billion social media user identities existed worldwide—69.9% of the global population. That is an estimate of accounts or identities, not a verified count of unique people. Which platform is “most popular” depends on whether you mean survey-reported use or app activity; those measures produce different leaders.

This roundup separates global identity estimates, survey responses and app-use data. The global figure is DataReportal’s April 2026 update; Pew Research Center’s platform comparisons come from surveys conducted in 2026 and published October 1, 2026.

How many people use social media in 2026?

DataReportal estimated 5.79 billion social media user identities in April 2026, equivalent to 69.9% of the world’s 8.28 billion people. The estimate was up by 294 million identities, or 5.4%, in the 12 months to April 2026. DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update cautions that user identities may not represent unique human beings: people can have multiple accounts, and platforms’ reporting practices and estimation methods differ.

For that reason, “5.79 billion people” would overstate what this figure establishes. It is a global identity estimate, not an audited headcount. It also should not be added to platform survey results, advertising-reach figures or app-activity measures; those count different things.

Which social media platform is most popular?

There is no single winner independent of the measurement method. GWI’s self-reported monthly-use figures and Similarweb’s app-activity data yield different rankings. The percentages below have different denominators and methods, so read each column separately rather than comparing them as though they were one survey.

Measure What it indicates Reported result
Self-reported monthly use Share of internet users aged 16+ who said they used each platform monthly; reported by DataReportal from GWI data. Facebook 56.3%; YouTube 55.3%; Instagram 54.6%. Facebook ranks first in this measure.
App activity Similarweb app-open dataset, presented separately by DataReportal. YouTube ranks first; WhatsApp’s app-user index is 87.4% of YouTube’s; Instagram is third, Facebook fourth and TikTok fifth.

These figures and rankings are reported in DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report. An app-activity ranking is not a ranking of unique users, and a self-reported monthly-use percentage is not an advertising-reach estimate.

For a country-by-country survey comparison, Pew Research Center asked adults in 37 countries whether they used five named platforms. Its 2026 country medians put Facebook ahead of the other four, but the survey did not cover every social platform and is not a complete global market-share ranking.

How widely are the major platforms used across countries?

Pew Research Center’s report, published October 1, 2026, gives the median share of adults reporting use across 37 countries. The international interviews were conducted February 8 to May 13, 2026, with U.S. results drawn from separate survey waves. These are medians across countries, not shares of the world’s population.

Platform 37-country median reporting use
Facebook 69%
Instagram 51%
TikTok 40%
X 18%
Snapchat 18%

In Pew’s comparison, Facebook is generally the most-used of these five platforms. Instagram is as popular as or more popular than Facebook in some high-income European and Asia-Pacific countries. The comparison is limited to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and Snapchat; it says nothing definitive about platforms Pew did not ask about.

Which platforms are most used by age?

Pew’s 37-country median shares show a substantial age divide for Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat. The values below are medians across surveyed countries, not global population-weighted totals.

Platform Adults 18–34 Adults 35–49 Adults 50+
Facebook 78% 74% 59%
Instagram 77% 57% 29%
TikTok 64% 44% 26%
Snapchat 35% 12% 4%
X 29% 16% 9%

Instagram use was more common among younger adults in 36 of the 37 countries Pew surveyed; TikTok use was much more prevalent among younger adults virtually everywhere in the sample. Facebook’s age pattern varies by income context: adults 18–34 often lead in middle-income countries, while adults 35–49 tend to lead in high-income countries.

Which social media platforms are growing?

Pew’s comparison of selected middle-income countries found statistically significant increases in TikTok use between its 2023 and 2026 surveys in all six countries shown. Nigeria had the largest increase in this set.

Country TikTok use in 2023 TikTok use in 2026 Change
Nigeria 25% 57% +32 percentage points
Indonesia 35% 62% +27 percentage points
Argentina 31% 55% +24 percentage points
South Africa 37% 59% +22 percentage points
Mexico 41% 62% +21 percentage points
Kenya 37% 58% +21 percentage points

These are changes in reported use in the countries Pew compared, not a claim that TikTok grew at the same rate everywhere. Country availability differs by platform, and the 2023 comparison did not include Snapchat.

Pew also found Facebook and Instagram use rose somewhat in several of the eight middle-income countries with comparable data. X use stayed the same or declined in most of those comparisons, including Brazil, where reported use fell from 22% in 2023 to 7% in 2026; it grew in Indonesia and Nigeria. Those selected-country results do not establish a global decline in X use.

Why do people use social media?

GWI data reported by DataReportal show that 49.0% of adult social media users visit to keep in touch with friends and family, 39.3% to fill spare time and 30.1% to read news. Respondents could select multiple reasons, so these percentages are not mutually exclusive. Participants reported just over 4.5 reasons on average; the figures describe overlapping motivations, not a single primary purpose for each user.

How many social platforms does the average person use?

GWI’s average was 6.75 platforms used monthly by online adults, based on Q2 2025 data and reported in DataReportal’s annual Digital 2026 report. This is a multi-platform-use average, not the number of accounts held by every person, and its input period predates the April 2026 global identity update. It helps explain why a platform can rank highly in one measure without being the only service people use.

How to read social media statistics accurately

  • User identities: estimated platform or social-media identities; not necessarily unique people.
  • Survey-reported use: people’s answers to a defined question about using named platforms, within a specified country, age group and field period.
  • Self-reported monthly use: respondents’ stated platform use in a month; it is not the same as opening an app or seeing an advertisement.
  • App activity: measures such as app opens or app-user indexes, which describe activity rather than a complete count of unique people.
  • Advertising reach, daily use, time spent and favorite platform: separate measures that answer different questions. A platform’s result on one axis should not be substituted for another.

Always check the denominator, geography, age range, collection date and exact measure before comparing two numbers. In particular, a country median cannot be read as a worldwide population share, and an app-activity index cannot be directly compared with a survey percentage.
