“One-click checkout” in WooCommerce can mean either wallet-based express checkout—such as Apple Pay or Google Pay—or a direct Buy Now flow for logged-in customers who already have a saved payment method. They are different setups: wallet buttons can be available to eligible new or returning shoppers, while the documented Cashier Buy Now flow is for qualifying returning customers. Choose the flow that matches your goal before changing settings.
Choose the one-click checkout flow you need
| Flow | Who can use it | How it works | Typical placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallet-based express checkout | Eligible shoppers with a supported wallet, browser, device, and account; may include guests | A wallet or accelerated-payment service uses information already available in the shopper’s account. WooCommerce documentation describes express checkout as letting customers pay with pre-filled information from an existing account (WooCommerce Stripe express checkout documentation). | Product, cart, or checkout page, depending on gateway and eligibility |
| Returning-customer Buy Now | Registered customers meeting the Cashier plugin’s order and saved-payment requirements | A direct repeat purchase uses a payment method already saved for that store account, avoiding the cart and payment re-entry in the documented flow. | All products or selected product pages |
If you want a faster option for first-time or guest shoppers, start with express checkout. If you want logged-in customers to buy again without revisiting the cart, investigate Cashier’s Buy Now module.
Set up express checkout with Stripe
Stripe’s WooCommerce extension supports express checkout methods including Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link by Stripe. Which buttons appear depends on the payment method, your store configuration, and the shopper’s eligibility; selecting a method does not guarantee that every shopper will see it.

- Connect Stripe. In WooCommerce, connect the Stripe extension to your Stripe account and confirm that the account and webhooks are configured.
- Enable the desired methods. In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods. Select the express checkout methods you want and save. Apple Pay and Google Pay are controlled together in the extension settings.
- Check domain and regional eligibility. Google Pay requires the domain to be enabled in your Stripe account. Link availability varies by country. Check Apple Pay’s domain and server requirements and the current Stripe setup guide for each method.
- Review button placement and eligibility notices. Use the settings preview and notices to check whether buttons are expected on product, cart, and checkout pages. Test with qualifying shopper accounts and devices.
Stripe’s express checkout buttons may not render in some product or configuration cases, including some non-default product types, composite products, and pre-orders charged on release. Certain tax configurations for non-shippable products can also affect availability. Required custom fields can prevent express payment when those fields are not collected on the page where the button appears. Review the current Stripe express checkout documentation before relying on a button for a particular product.

Set up direct Buy Now for returning customers with Cashier
The documented Cashier flow is not a general guest checkout shortcut. The customer must be registered, have at least one completed order, and have paid through an eligible gateway after saved cards were enabled. Confirm that your gateway is among the ones supported by the current Cashier documentation and that saved cards or payment methods are active in that gateway.
- Enable saved payment methods in your payment gateway before customers place the qualifying order. Cashier’s setup guide says the completed order must use an eligible gateway after saved cards are enabled.
- In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce Admin > WooCommerce > Settings > Cashier, then enable the Buy Now module.
- Choose whether Buy Now replaces Add to cart for all products or is enabled only for selected products.
- Optionally configure coupons and the shipping method that should apply to Buy Now purchases.
- Save the settings and test with an eligible logged-in customer on the product types and shipping/tax combinations you sell.
Cashier describes its flow as letting eligible returning customers purchase without visiting the cart or re-entering payment details. Plugin behavior can vary by installed version, so verify the live behavior and configuration in your version before making Buy Now available store-wide.

Check checkout blocks, PayPal, and saved payment methods
WooCommerce Checkout and Cart blocks
The Checkout block’s Express Checkout block renders only when an active gateway supports express checkout. WooCommerce recommends WooPayments where available, but gateway behavior differs. Stripe and PayPal Payments have their own block support and compatibility rules; do not assume a shortcode-based button behaves the same way in Cart and Checkout blocks. See WooCommerce’s Cart and Checkout block documentation and your gateway’s current instructions.

PayPal Payments documents express buttons for Block Cart and Block Express Checkout. Its “Proceed to PayPal” flow does not support vaulting or tokenization, and that button is hidden when a subscription product is in the cart. Check the PayPal Payments documentation for the current behavior of the specific button you plan to use.

Stripe saved cards
Stripe’s WooCommerce extension can let logged-in customers save payment methods during checkout or manage them under My Account > Payment Methods. Stripe says the extension uses tokenization, so full card details are not stored directly on the WooCommerce site. Saved cards can speed later purchases, but a saved card alone does not turn the standard checkout into Cashier’s direct Buy Now flow. Stripe’s saved cards documentation explains the account-side options.

Troubleshoot buttons or Buy Now options that do not appear
- Confirm the gateway and method are active. A payment method selected in settings can still be unavailable if account, domain, country, or other requirements are not met.
- Check the shopper’s setup. Wallet availability can depend on country, currency, browser, device, wallet account, and saved wallet payment method.
- Check page and checkout type. Confirm the gateway supports the intended button location and whether the store uses Cart and Checkout blocks or shortcode-based pages.
- Inspect product and checkout requirements. Product type, pre-order behavior, subscription items, required custom fields, shipping, and tax configuration can affect a shortcut.
- For Cashier, check customer eligibility. The customer needs a registered account, a completed order, and an eligible saved method obtained after saved cards were enabled.
- Recheck the installed extension’s current documentation. Payment methods, country and currency eligibility, interfaces, and block compatibility can change.
