DockerLinux is a free browser game that its creator describes as a guided way to practice Linux shell basics and Docker workflows. It covers nine levels, from commands such as pwd, ls, and cd to building an image and starting a multi-container app with docker compose up. The key limitation: the terminal and Docker daemon are simulated in JavaScript, not backed by a real Linux machine or container.

What DockerLinux teaches

According to the creator’s announcement, the game starts with navigating a shell and progresses to Docker tasks, ending with a sandbox level. The intended path gives beginners a place to encounter command syntax and workflow concepts before trying them on a real system.

  • Use basic shell commands, including pwd, ls, and cd.
  • Build an image from a virtual Dockerfile.
  • Work with containers, including starting and stopping them and viewing logs.
  • Explore volumes and networks.
  • Use YAML with Docker Compose to start a multi-container app.

These are features described by the creator, not an independently verified inventory of supported commands or behaviors. The creator’s DEV Community announcement, published September 24, 2026, is the source for the curriculum and feature details.

How the game structures practice

The creator says the nine-level course includes missions, XP, achievements, quizzes, explanations after tasks, hints that reveal progressively more help, and a downloadable certificate. Progress is described as saved in the browser, and mobile users are offered on-screen terminal keys. These details may change as the service develops.

The creator describes DockerLinux as free and usable in a browser without an account. That makes it a low-friction way to try command-line exercises without installing software or risking changes to a personal machine; it does not mean the exercises run on a real machine.

What the simulation means for learners

The creator states, “There’s no real VM or container behind it.” The shell, virtual filesystem, and Docker-like behavior are JavaScript simulations. That distinction matters: a command succeeding in the game demonstrates that it is accepted by the game’s model, not that it will work identically in a Linux distribution or a real Docker environment.

The announcement does not include an independent audit of command coverage or fidelity, nor measured learning outcomes. The creator invites experienced Docker users to flag differences from real behavior. Treat the game as a guided introduction to vocabulary, command structure, and the general sequence of tasks—not proof of production readiness or operational competence.

How to use it alongside real practice

  1. Use the levels to get oriented. Follow the guided shell and Docker exercises, and use hints and explanations to understand the concepts behind each task.
  2. Check what you learn against official references. Verify commands and behavior in the documentation for the Linux distribution and Docker setup you intend to use.
  3. Practice in a disposable real environment. When ready, use a test machine or isolated environment so you can observe real filesystem, container, and Compose behavior without risking important data or services.
  4. Notice where the two environments differ. The game’s simplified model can help you recognize a workflow, but real systems may support different commands, options, errors, and side effects.
