Translate a book as a sequence of connected sections—not as isolated sentences and not automatically as one enormous prompt. First map the manuscript, then give each section the relevant source context, a compact glossary and style guide, and selected continuity notes. Preserve alignment between source and translation, check completeness and consistency, and have a bilingual human review the result. This workflow can reduce avoidable drift, but it cannot guarantee a faithful or publication-ready translation.

Why context matters—and why one giant prompt is not the answer

Literary translation depends on more than the meaning of an individual sentence. A pronoun may refer to someone introduced pages earlier; a character’s voice may emerge through repeated word choices; and a term may acquire a different meaning as the story develops. Translating each sentence without surrounding context can obscure those relationships.

Karpinska and Iyyer’s 2023 study found that GPT-3.5, specifically text-davinci-003, produced higher-quality translations when asked to translate literary paragraphs rather than sentence by sentence. The study covered 18 linguistically diverse language pairs and reported fewer mistranslations, grammar errors, and stylistic inconsistencies in the paragraph-level condition. Its authors also reported that the work involved approximately 350 hours of annotation and analysis. These findings support giving a model document context; they do not show that submitting an entire book as one prompt is best, nor do they establish an expected success rate for other models, books, or language pairs.

There is a second reason not to equate a large context window with a reliable whole-book translation. Wang and colleagues’ 2025 EMNLP paper on SEGALE reports that many evaluated open-weight LLMs did not translate documents effectively at their reported maximum context lengths. A model may accept a long input without using all of it consistently or preserving its details in the output.

Build a book-level reference before translating

Start by preparing the source manuscript, then create a small reference that can travel with each section. It should guide repeated decisions without replacing the passage the model is actually translating.

Profile the manuscript

  • Check that the text has been extracted correctly and that chapter breaks, headings, footnotes, and other meaningful structure are intact.
  • Record the genre, point of view, tone, and recurring stylistic choices that matter to the translation.
  • List character names, relationships, forms of address, recurring objects, and important terms.
  • Note known ambiguities or choices that require consistency, such as whether a name is transliterated or adapted.

Maintain a glossary and continuity guide

For each important name or term, record the chosen target-language form and a short explanation of how it is used. A bare pair of equivalent words may not be enough: a term might be a title in one chapter, a nickname in another, or deliberately ambiguous throughout the story. The continuity guide can also capture voice differences between characters and decisions about register, punctuation, or recurring motifs.

Keep these notes concise and update them when an editorial decision changes. Use summaries only as navigation aids—for example, to locate a character or scene. When translating a passage, provide the relevant source text itself rather than asking the model to translate from a summary.

Translate coherent sections with relevant context

Work in paragraph- or scene-sized units when that suits the book. Include the passage to translate, enough surrounding source material to resolve references, the current glossary and style notes, and relevant prior target-language text when continuity depends on an earlier choice. A section boundary should follow the material: a scene break or chapter transition may be more useful than an arbitrary word count.

No single chunk size has been established as ideal for every book, model, or language pair. The practical goal is to give the model enough context to interpret the current passage while keeping the work reviewable and recoverable. If a scene’s meaning depends on a clue or phrasing from much earlier, add that specific context rather than relying on a broad summary to stand in for it.

A repeatable section packet

For each translation request, organize the material in a consistent order. A simple working packet can use these labels:

BOOK REFERENCE: terminology, character relationships, voice and style decisions
CURRENT SECTION: stable section identifier and source passage
NEARBY SOURCE CONTEXT: preceding or following material needed to resolve references
RELEVANT PRIOR TRANSLATION: earlier target-language wording needed for continuity
TASK: translate the current section; preserve its meaning and structure; do not add or omit content
OUTPUT: translated section under the same identifier

Adapt the packet to the text and model rather than treating it as a proven prompt formula. Keep the source passage clearly distinct from notes and instructions so an editor can tell what was translated.

Preserve alignment so the work can be checked and resumed

Assign each chapter or section a stable identifier and keep its source and target text linked. Save revisions with version history or another clear record of what changed. Track which sections are translated, reviewed, or awaiting review. This makes it possible to investigate a suspected omission or revise one chapter without having to reconstruct the status of the entire book.

Structure-aware book-translation software such as BookTrans documents a workflow that scouts a book, translates in context, supports editing, and checks completeness, terminology, and structure. That is an example of an implementation, not independent proof that its output—or any software’s output—is ready to publish. Whatever tools are used, retain an inspectable source-to-target record.

Check completeness and consistency before judging fluency

A fluent paragraph can still be wrong because it leaves something out, adds unsupported material, or changes a character’s established voice. Run mechanical checks separately from literary review so a smooth-sounding output does not conceal a structural problem.

Mechanical checks

  • Confirm every source section has a corresponding translated section.
  • Compare headings, notes, paragraph breaks, and other meaningful structure against the source.
  • Search for recurring names and terms that may have drifted from the glossary.
  • Look for unexplained additions, missing passages, or source-language text left untranslated.

Bilingual editorial review

A qualified bilingual reviewer should compare the translation with the source, not just proofread the target text in isolation. Review for mistranslation, nuance, dialogue, wordplay, cultural references, and the author’s voice. Karpinska and Iyyer’s 2023 paper warns that critical errors, including omissions, remained in its tested setup and that human intervention was necessary to preserve authorial voice.

A 2026 study by Wang and colleagues compared two multi-agent workflows for Chinese–English fiction translation with professional human translations. The university abstract reports accuracy comparable to professional translations for both systems, but their stylistic tradeoffs differed: the capability-driven workflow showed stronger stylistic qualities and poetic language while sometimes adding extraneous content; the practice-derived workflow was concise but could be less cohesive. This is evidence that different workflows can trade off style, concision, cohesion, and fidelity—not that one approach is universally best or that the results apply to every language pair or genre.

Use automated evaluation as a signal, not a sign-off

Long translations can be difficult to evaluate when sentence boundaries or segmentation differ between the source and target. SEGALE, introduced by Wang and colleagues in 2025, addresses evaluation of long-document translation as continuous text while aligning segmented sentences. Such evaluation can help surface problems, but an automatic score cannot establish that a literary translation preserves voice, implication, humor, or cultural meaning. It does not replace bilingual review.

Confirm you have authority to translate the text

Before processing a manuscript, establish that you have the right to translate it for the intended use. Possessing a copy does not by itself settle whether a particular translation or publication is permitted. The answer depends on the work, the intended use, and applicable law; a translation tool cannot determine permission for you.

What this workflow can—and cannot—establish

The evidence supports a careful, context-aware process: paragraph-level context performed better than sentence-by-sentence translation in one 2023 GPT-3.5 literary-translation study, while a 2025 study cautions that long context windows do not ensure effective long-document translation. Neither finding supplies a universal book-translation success rate, an ideal chunk size, or a guarantee for a particular model. Treat the result as a draft to inspect, revise, and review—not as a finished translation simply because it is long or fluent.
