Moving an eligible app to an SD card can free some space in your phone’s internal storage by placing some app components on the card. It does not necessarily move the app’s entire data footprint. Whether you can do it depends on the phone, the storage mode, and whether the app allows external installation.
What changes when you move an app?
Some app components move from internal storage to the SD card, which may leave more room on the phone. The amount freed varies, and some app data can remain in internal storage. Samsung specifically notes this limitation for apps moved using its Galaxy workflow: Samsung Support UK’s SD card guidance.
Moving an app is different from moving photos or documents. The move option applies only to apps that the phone and app support; it is not a way to transfer every app or all of its data.

Portable storage and internal storage are different
When setting up an SD card, Android offers portable storage or internal storage, also called adoptable storage on Android’s platform. Google explains: “When you set up an SD card on your Android device, you can choose between portable storage or internal storage.” Google Android Help describes their different uses:
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
| Storage mode | Can store apps? | Can transfer the card between devices? | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable storage | No. Google says apps cannot be installed on a card set up this way. | Yes, for files, on compatible devices. | Use it for files such as photos and videos. It is not an app-install destination. Google Android Help |
| Internal/adoptable storage | Yes, if the device supports it and the app permits external installation. | No, not as freely transferable portable media. | Android formats and encrypts adopted media for the device. Formatting erases the card’s contents. Android Open Source Project; Google Android Help |
Adoptable storage is a platform feature, not a guarantee that a particular phone offers it. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage; its documented app-move option is a separate workflow for eligible apps. Samsung Support US
Can your phone and app move to an SD card?
Both have to allow it. Android’s app installation guidance explains that an app’s android:installLocation setting governs whether it can be installed externally. A phone can also omit the feature or the move option for a particular app. Android Developers: App install location

- If Samsung’s app Storage screen has no “Change” option, there is no move action available for that app on that device.
- Eligibility can reflect performance considerations, not just a missing setting.
Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by software version and service provider. Samsung Support US
How to move an eligible app on a Samsung Galaxy

What happens if you remove the SD card?
A portable card is intended to be transferred between compatible devices for access to files. Adopted storage is formatted and encrypted for the phone that adopted it, so it should not be treated as a plug-and-play archive. Android’s developer guidance warns that unmounting external storage immediately kills apps running from it. Android Open Source Project; Android Developers

Before formatting or moving anything
- Back up the card before formatting it. Android warns that formatting permanently deletes its data. Google Android Help
- Check your exact phone or tablet model to confirm it has a microSD slot and supports the storage mode you want. An SD card slot alone does not establish that apps can be moved.
- Use portable storage for transferable files; use adoptable storage for apps only if the device supports it and you accept that the card is tied to that device.
