There is no single best VPN for every Linux user. Tom’s Guide names NordVPN its top Linux VPN in its 2026 roundup, while Proton VPN and ExpressVPN offer documented Linux apps and features worth comparing. That ranking is Tom’s Guide’s editorial judgment, not a head-to-head test conducted for this article. The available evidence does not establish which service is fastest, best for streaming, or easiest to use across Linux distributions.

How to choose a Linux VPN

Start with your distribution and the way you want to manage the connection. A graphical app may be more convenient for switching servers and using provider-specific features; a command-line client may suit a terminal-first workflow. Support differs between a provider’s GUI and CLI, so check the exact distribution and version against its current installation guide.

Linux networking tools can connect through VPN protocols without a provider’s dedicated app. A provider client may add controls such as a kill switch, filtering, or account-specific server options. Those additions are useful only if they work on your setup and match what you need.

  • Check distribution support: Confirm your distro and version are currently supported by the specific client you plan to use.
  • Compare protocol options: Consider which protocols the provider documents for Linux, and whether you prefer its app or a manual configuration.
  • Look for the protections you need: Review the documented behavior of the kill switch, DNS leak protection, and IPv6 handling.
  • Verify the evidence: Distinguish a provider’s feature or audit claim from an independently tested result, and review current plans and audit information before subscribing.

Linux VPNs worth comparing

Provider Linux support described in its documentation Notable details
Proton VPN GUI app: Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora. CLI: Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch. Its documentation describes DNS and IPv6 leak protection for both clients and says they do not require sudo rights to run. The GUI feature list includes an always-on kill switch, port forwarding, NetShield DNS filtering, Secure Core, custom DNS, full IPv6 support, and NAT Type 2. Manual OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration is also documented.
NordVPN Linux app; check its current documentation for your distribution and setup. Its Linux page recommends NordLynx, which NordVPN describes as based on WireGuard and optimized for performance and privacy. Tom’s Guide ranked it first in its 2026 roundup, citing its Linux GUI as well as speed, streaming, security, and privacy features.
ExpressVPN Linux setup guide specifies a 64-bit operating system. Its Linux page lists Lightway, OpenVPN, and WireGuard and describes a Linux app. Its setup guide describes an advanced kill switch that can block internet traffic unless the VPN is active. ExpressVPN’s statements about its server network and independent audits are provider claims.
Mullvad Official Linux app installation instructions are available; check the current guide for supported distributions and steps. The available documentation establishes that it provides Linux installation guidance, but does not provide a basis here for comparing its app features or performance with the other options.

Feature descriptions in this table come from provider documentation; they are not independent verification that a feature behaves as intended on every Linux configuration. Distribution support and app details can change.

Which Linux VPN should you try first?

For a distro-specific GUI or CLI choice: Proton VPN

Proton VPN is a practical candidate if you use Debian, Ubuntu, or Fedora and want a documented GUI, or if you use Arch and prefer its documented CLI. Its feature list is broad, but confirm that the particular feature you need is available in your current app and plan before choosing it.

For a provider with a leading editorial ranking: NordVPN

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup selects NordVPN as its top Linux VPN. The publication cites a Linux GUI and performance, streaming, security, and privacy features. Treat that as the publication’s comparative assessment: the evidence here does not include independent, reproducible benchmark results to confirm a speed or streaming advantage.

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad

For protocol choice and a documented traffic-blocking control: ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN’s Linux documentation lists Lightway, OpenVPN, and WireGuard. Its setup guide describes an advanced kill switch that blocks internet traffic unless the VPN is active. Check the 64-bit operating-system requirement and confirm current distro compatibility before installing.

What “performs best” means for Linux

Performance is not just a speed figure. A VPN can be a poor fit if its client does not support your distro, its interface slows down routine connection changes, or its protection controls do not behave as you expect. Conversely, a protocol recommendation or a provider’s claim of optimization is not proof of the fastest real-world connection.

No speed, streaming, leak, or usability tests were run for this comparison. Tom’s Guide’s ranking is the only comparative performance assessment described here, and it should be attributed to that publication rather than treated as a benchmark. For a decision based on measured speed or streaming access, look for recent independent testing that identifies its test setup, location, protocol, and date.

How to check a Linux VPN before relying on it

  1. Verify your distro and architecture. Read the provider’s current Linux installation page and confirm your distribution, release, and whether a 64-bit system is required.
  2. Choose the client workflow. Decide whether you want a GUI, CLI, or manual protocol configuration, then follow the provider’s instructions for that specific path.
  3. Review the connection controls. Identify how the client enables its kill switch and leak protections, and whether those controls are available on your distro and plan.
  4. Test the behavior yourself. If a kill switch matters, connect through the VPN, enable the control, and verify that internet traffic is blocked when the VPN disconnects. If leak protection matters, check DNS and IPv6 behavior using a trusted test method while connected and after reconnecting.
  5. Check current terms and evidence. Review the current plan limits and provider documentation, then assess any independent audits or performance tests by their scope and date.
