Some new TVs have composite AV inputs, but many do not. The ports vary by exact model and region: you may find yellow, red and white RCA jacks, a model-specific AV breakout cable that plugs into a small jack, or HDMI ports without an analog AV input. Check the TV’s official specifications or manual for its full model number before you buy.
What “AV input” means on a TV
In this context, AV usually means composite video and stereo audio: a yellow plug carries video, while red and white plugs carry the right and left audio channels. It is an analog, standard-definition connection. HDMI is digital and carries video and audio over one cable.
Component video is another analog format, not the same as composite. It commonly uses green, blue and red plugs for video, with separate audio connections. In a component set, the red plug is video; in a composite set, red is typically right-channel audio. Check the labels and manual rather than matching plugs by color alone.

Why the answer varies by TV
There is no universal port list for new televisions. Inputs differ by model, screen size, year and market, and a TV family’s ports may vary between models. Some televisions provide RCA composite jacks; others accept analog AV through a 3.5 mm AV input and a specified breakout lead; still others omit analog AV and provide HDMI instead.

A small round jack does not automatically mean AV input. It may be a headphone output, and AV breakout cables can use different wiring. Sony’s guide illustrates model-specific port differences, while Philips describes the use of a specified breakout cable on compatible models. Check the exact model’s documentation: Sony TV ports and connections and Philips AV connection guidance.
How to check a TV before buying
- Find the full model number. Check the TV, box or settings screen. Roku says its TV model number can be found on the back of the set, on the box, or under Settings > System > About. See Roku’s guide to TV ports and model information.
- Open documentation for that exact model and region. Use the manufacturer’s product specifications, connectivity page or reference guide. Do not assume a similarly named model or a review unit has the same ports.
- Look for explicit analog-input wording. Search for “Composite Video Input,” “AV IN” or instructions for an AV mini-jack. Confirm whether the specified breakout cable is included or must be obtained separately.
- Match the source output to the TV input. Yellow/red/white composite plugs need a compatible composite input or an active composite-to-HDMI converter. A component source needs a component-compatible input or converter, not a composite converter.
Ways to connect an older device
If the TV has RCA composite inputs
Connect yellow to composite video, red to right-channel audio, and white to left-channel audio. TCL notes that a black plug may serve as the left audio channel on some setups. Then select the TV’s AV or composite source. Follow the TV manual if the input uses a breakout lead. TCL recommends HDMI where available as manufacturer guidance for carrying audio and video on one cable; see TCL’s composite connection instructions.

If the TV has a 3.5 mm AV input
Use the breakout cable specified for the exact TV model. A generic 3.5 mm audio cable is not a substitute: it may not carry video, and two similar-looking AV leads may use different pin assignments. Confirm the jack’s function and cable part or specification in the manual.
If the TV has HDMI but no analog input
Put an active composite RCA-to-HDMI converter between the source and TV. It converts the analog signal to a digital HDMI output; a passive RCA-to-HDMI cable cannot do that. Check that the converter accepts the source’s signal and handles its audio, and connect its HDMI output to the TV. LG describes third-party analog-to-HDMI conversion as a possible option, while explicitly not endorsing the example product in its help article: LG’s guidance on connecting a VCR to an LG TV.

Conversion does not add detail that the source never captured. Composite is standard definition, so a VCR, older DVD player or game console may look soft or show artifacts on a large modern screen. Converter results vary; no particular model is guaranteed by the connection method alone.
If the source has component video output
Use a component-compatible TV input or an active component-to-HDMI converter. A composite-to-HDMI converter is the wrong format. Check the converter’s supported resolutions and audio handling in its own documentation; composite and component are distinct signal types.

Choose the right cable or converter

Before choosing, verify the connection type at both ends, whether a mini-jack needs a particular lead, and whether conversion electronics are required. A three-plug composite cable works only when the devices have compatible composite connections; it does not convert the signal to HDMI. HDMI’s features also depend on the particular TV port: Sony notes that capabilities such as eARC or 4K/120 Hz are port- and model-dependent. See Sony’s overview of TV ports.
