Neither host is a universal winner. Cloudways is a managed cloud platform that lets you choose underlying infrastructure and offers scaling and developer workflow tools. DreamHost has several distinct hosting families, from shared Web Hosting to managed WordPress, Managed VPS, VPS, and Dedicated. The right choice depends on your site, desired control, management workload, billing preferences, and backup needs—not an established speed advantage.

How Cloudways and DreamHost differ

Decision point Cloudways DreamHost
Hosting model A managed platform over selected cloud infrastructure providers. Separate plan families, including shared Web Hosting, DreamPress, Managed VPS, VPS, and Dedicated.
Infrastructure control Choose an underlying provider and scale servers vertically through the platform. Control varies by plan: shared hosting has less server control, Managed VPS is maintained by DreamHost without root access, and VPS provides root access with customer-managed configuration and security.
Applications and workflow Supports applications including WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Laravel, with features such as Git integration, staging, and cloning. DreamPress is managed WordPress hosting; Web Hosting supports general sites. Features differ by plan.
Billing structure Three-day trial, then charges depend on provider, server size, bandwidth, and paid add-ons. Displayed Web Hosting tiers have introductory and renewal pricing; check the current price and term for your location.

These products are not direct equivalents at every price point. In particular, compare a Cloudways managed cloud setup with a DreamHost plan that has a similar level of resources and management—not automatically with entry-level shared Web Hosting.

When Cloudways is the better fit

Cloudways may suit developers, agencies, and site owners who want a managed platform but also want to select the cloud provider underneath it. Cloudways lists DigitalOcean, Google Compute Engine, and AWS as options. Its platform describes vertical scaling, one-click app deployment, and support for applications including WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Laravel. These are provider-described features, not independent performance results. Cloudways features

Workflow and administration

Cloudways describes Git integration, team access, projects, server and app cloning, staging, server-side cron options, and one-click backup and restore. Those tools can be useful when a site has a development workflow or needs managed server operations without giving up all infrastructure choice. Cloudways also says it handles server patches and provides 24/7/365 support for platform-related and migration matters; that describes the stated scope and availability, not a comparative support-quality rating. Capacity and cost

Cloudways says its trial lasts three days. After it ends, charges depend on the chosen provider, server size, bandwidth, and paid add-ons. Its FAQ also notes backup storage fees, free Let’s Encrypt SSL, and managed migration options. Cloudways recommends 1 GB servers mainly for testing or staging and 2 GB or more for live sites; treat that as Cloudways’ own sizing guidance, not an independently established requirement. When DreamHost is the better fit

DreamHost is worth considering if you want to choose among several hosting models from one provider. Its current Web Hosting tiers are Launch, Growth, and Scale, with differences that include site count, storage, and databases. The sales page showed introductory and renewal prices when checked on October 7, 2026; because these amounts and terms can change, confirm the exact price for your region and billing term before signing up. Choose the plan by how much control you want

  • Web Hosting: Shared hosting for general websites. DreamHost’s plan guide notes that unusually high CPU use by another site can affect shared resources.
  • DreamPress: Managed WordPress hosting, configured for one website per plan.
  • Managed VPS: DreamHost manages the environment and protects the customer’s RAM resources, without root access.
  • VPS: Provides root access, while the customer handles server configuration, maintenance, and security.
  • Dedicated: A separate hosting category in DreamHost’s lineup; confirm its current specifications and responsibilities on the plan page.

The distinction between Managed VPS and VPS matters: root access brings more control, but also puts more administration and security work on you. DreamHost hosting types

Watch the email and renewal terms

DreamHost’s documentation says email is free for the first three months on each current Web Hosting tier, after which a paid Email plan is automatically added. Include that later charge, along with renewal pricing, when estimating the ongoing cost. DreamHost Web Hosting plans

Compare backups by retention, cost, and restore options

Do not treat “automated backups” as proof of a particular retention period. Cloudways describes automated or on-demand offsite backups and one-click restoration, while its FAQ says backup storage may cost extra. The cited Cloudways material does not establish a retention duration, so check the settings and charges for the specific configuration. Cloudways features Cloudways FAQ

DreamHost’s hosting FAQ reports average retention of two weeks for website backups and five days for database backups. It says long-term backups are not included in a hosting plan. If you need to recover older versions, plan for a separate backup arrangement. DreamHost hosting FAQ

Which host should you choose?

  • Choose Cloudways if you value managed cloud workflows, provider choice, vertical scaling, and features such as staging, Git integration, and cloning—and you are comfortable evaluating usage-based charges and add-ons.
  • Choose a DreamHost plan if you want to select among shared hosting, managed WordPress, managed VPS, VPS, or Dedicated according to how much administration and control you want.
  • Compare DreamHost Managed VPS with Cloudways when managed server operations are important; compare DreamHost VPS when you specifically want root access and accept responsibility for configuration, maintenance, and security.
  • Compare the full bill, including renewal terms, email after its initial period, bandwidth or other usage charges, paid add-ons, and backup storage.

No controlled, like-for-like speed, uptime, or stress test is established here, so there is no evidence-based basis to declare either provider faster or more reliable. Choose by plan and responsibility boundary, then verify current terms before purchase.
