A menu bar usage monitor can make Codex and Claude limits easier to check without opening a CLI or account dashboard—but how it gets those numbers matters. The app in this title is not identified in the available material, so its actual features, data sources, privacy practices, price, and macOS requirements cannot be verified here. The comparisons below explain what this kind of utility can do and the decisions a builder needs to make, without attributing other apps’ features to it.
What a Codex and Claude usage monitor can show
These utilities aim to put subscription quota information within quick reach. Depending on the provider and app, the menu bar may show a utilization gauge, a time window, or when that window resets. The available examples advertise Claude five-hour and seven-day windows, and Codex weekly limits; another describes five-hour and weekly windows for both services. Metrics and coverage are not consistent across apps. TokenUsageMonitor and UsageBar describe their respective offerings.
Quota usage is not the same as a token-by-token account of work. A monitor that reads a provider’s quota endpoint reports what that service exposes; an app that indexes local session history can offer a different view, such as activity by model or project. Some tools combine these approaches.

How usage data reaches the menu bar
The implementation choice affects freshness, reliability, privacy, and what can be displayed. Comparable products document three approaches; none is confirmed for the unidentified app in the title.

Read local CLI credentials or history
UsageBar says it reads locally available CLI credentials for Codex and Gemini, and manages Claude OAuth credentials or reads a Claude CLI Keychain entry. Quota Monitor describes live Codex quota reads through codex app-server alongside local Codex session history, and Anthropic OAuth quota reads alongside local Claude Code project-history indexing. Its documentation says session history and usage events are stored in a local SQLite database, while live refreshes contact provider services. These are product-specific descriptions, not claims about the titled app. UsageBar documentation; Quota Monitor repository.
Call a provider quota endpoint
A provider endpoint can provide current quota information without reconstructing usage from local logs. But an endpoint may be undocumented or private, and its format or availability can change. UsageBar says its ChatGPT/Codex and Gemini quota endpoints are unofficial, have no published service-level agreement, and may fail or change schema. Its documentation describes treating authentication errors, server errors, and schema drift as transient failures. A monitor built on such an endpoint needs to communicate stale or unavailable data clearly rather than presenting an old reading as current. UsageBar repository.

Read a signed-in browser session
UsageBar also offers an optional browser extension that reads usage from a signed-in Claude or ChatGPT browser session. Its repository says this avoids its rate-limited API endpoint, but while the browser source is preferred, some CLI-derived trends and notifications pause. That is a product-specific alternative, not evidence that the app in the title uses a browser extension. UsageBar repository.

A useful design starts by distinguishing the numbers on screen. A quota gauge answers how much of a provider’s allowance is used or remains in a particular window. Local session history can answer questions about activity over time or model use. Neither automatically means the app knows what a user will be billed.

Quota Monitor says its API-equivalent cost figures are estimates derived from token counts and model pricing, not provider invoices or subscription charges. That distinction matters especially when a person uses a subscription allowance: a calculated API equivalent is not the subscription price and should be labeled as an estimate. Quota Monitor repository.
Privacy and security depend on the specific app
“Local” does not necessarily mean that the app never makes network requests. A tool may keep history on the Mac while contacting provider services to refresh live quotas. Privacy claims should specify what stays local, what is sent over the network, and whether telemetry is collected.

- AgentPeek says its desktop app does not upload transcripts, diffs, prompts, or usage numbers during ordinary monitoring. This is the vendor’s statement about its own product. AgentPeek.
These statements describe different apps and should not be generalized to the one in the title. Credential storage and macOS distribution also deserve attention: UsageBar says its app is ad-hoc signed and not Developer ID signed or notarized, which can lead to recurring Keychain access prompts. That warning applies to UsageBar’s described distribution, not all menu bar utilities. UsageBar repository.
What a builder has to decide
For a menu bar utility, the central product decisions follow from the data it can obtain and the trust it needs to earn:

- What the number means: Separate quota utilization, local session activity, and estimated API-equivalent cost rather than presenting them as interchangeable.
- Where data comes from: Explain whether the app reads local CLI files or Keychain entries, calls a provider endpoint, or uses a signed-in browser session.
- How failures appear: Show when a reading is stale, unavailable, or based on an endpoint that may change, instead of implying certainty.
- What leaves the Mac: Disclose provider refresh traffic, local storage, and any analytics or installation check-in in terms users can understand.
- How credentials and updates are handled: Make the credential path, signing and notarization status, and release verification clear.
Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal tool that works alongside existing IDEs and development tools, and says it runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows. Its product page states that “When used with a Claude Console account, Claude Code consumes API tokens at standard API pricing.” That Console-account pricing context should not be confused with a Claude subscription quota shown by a monitor. Anthropic: Claude Code.
