Use a browser canvas to encode the image as JPEG, then compare the resulting Blob’s byte count with your target. Because you need the file to get larger, raise JPEG quality first; if that is not enough, larger pixel dimensions may increase the output size, but neither change guarantees an exact match.
Set the exact target in bytes
First decide what “KB” means. A decimal kilobyte is 1,000 bytes; a kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. Convert your requested size to an integer byte target and compare against that number—not a rounded KB display.
- For decimal KB: multiply the requested number by 1,000.
- For KiB: multiply the requested number by 1,024.
For example, 100 decimal KB means 100,000 bytes. That is only a target calculation; it does not mean the browser can encode your image to precisely that size.

Encode and measure the JPEG in the browser
Draw the image onto a canvas at the pixel dimensions you intend to use, then call canvas.toBlob() with the MIME type image/jpeg. Its quality argument is a value from 0 to 1 for formats such as JPEG. It controls encoding quality, not output length: the browser API does not accept a requested byte size or promise that any particular target can be reached. See the MDN toBlob() reference and the WHATWG HTML Standard’s Canvas section.

function encodeJpeg(canvas, quality, targetBytes) {
return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
canvas.toBlob((blob) => {
if (!blob) {
reject(new Error("JPEG encoding failed"));
return;
}
if (blob.type !== "image/jpeg") {
reject(new Error(`Expected JPEG, got ${blob.type || "unknown type"}`));
return;
}
resolve({
blob,
bytes: blob.size,
exactMatch: blob.size === targetBytes
});
}, "image/jpeg", quality);
});
}
// Example target: 100 decimal KB, or 100,000 bytes.
const result = await encodeJpeg(canvas, 1.0, 100 * 1000);
console.log(result.bytes, result.exactMatch);
The example measures the encoded result. It does not imply that quality 1.0 will produce 100,000 bytes.
Increase the output size without guessing
- Start at the intended dimensions. Draw the source image onto the canvas at the pixel dimensions you want the final JPEG to have.
- Encode and inspect the result. Check that the callback returned a Blob, confirm
blob.typeisimage/jpeg, and readblob.size. If it equals your byte target, you have a measured exact match for that output. - If it is too small, raise quality. Encode again with a higher quality value, up to 1.0, and measure the new Blob. Do not estimate the file size from the quality number; the image and browser’s encoder determine the actual result.
- If maximum quality is still too small, consider larger dimensions. This may create a larger JPEG, but changes the pixel dimensions and can affect how the image renders. Use this only if that tradeoff is acceptable, then encode and measure again.
- If no candidate matches, report the measured size honestly. You can use the nearest output or another workflow, but do not call it exact because a file manager rounds its display to the requested KB value.
The Canvas API documents a quality setting, not a byte-size target. It therefore offers no standards-backed guarantee that adjusting quality or dimensions will produce an exact requested length. The result is exact only when the measured byte count equals your calculated target.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Handle format, image access, and downloads
- Check the returned format. If a requested image type is unsupported, the browser may fall back to PNG. Verify
blob.typebefore naming or presenting the result as a JPEG. The HTML Standard describes canvas serialization behavior. - Handle a failed encode. The
toBlob()callback can receivenull; check for it before readingsizeor creating a download. - Watch for cross-origin restrictions. A cross-origin image needs suitable permission to be used in a canvas. If the canvas is not origin-clean, serializing it can raise a
SecurityError. - Prefer Blob output for larger images.
toDataURL()converts image data into an in-memory string and can have performance or URL-length drawbacks. MDN recommendstoBlob()for larger images; see its toDataURL() reference. - Manage preview URLs. If you use
URL.createObjectURL(blob)to preview or download the JPEG, callURL.revokeObjectURL()when that URL is no longer needed. See the MDN toBlob() reference.
Avoid adding arbitrary trailing bytes to force a file-size check to pass. That is not a reliable general solution: downstream software may reject, strip, or mishandle the extra data.
