KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (bug check 0x7A) means Windows could not read requested kernel data from the paging file into memory. It can be caused by disk errors, failing storage hardware, bad RAM, or other problems; the stop code alone does not identify the failed component. Start by recording the error parameters, then follow the steps below to investigate the cause. If Windows still starts, back up important files before running repair checks on a drive that may be failing.
Microsoft’s technical reference for bug check 0x7A is written primarily for developers, so the steps here translate its diagnostic guidance into a consumer-oriented sequence. They are investigations, not guaranteed fixes.
1. Record the full stop code and its parameters
Write down or photograph the blue-screen details, including the stop code and any hexadecimal parameters. The 0x7A code describes what went wrong while Windows was reading data; the parameters can help identify why. Microsoft says the second parameter is commonly an I/O status code, but interpretation can depend on the other parameters and Windows version.

2. Check whether the status points to a disk read error
Some second-parameter values can point toward a storage problem. Microsoft says 0xC000009C is typically associated with bad disk sectors, and 0xC000016A typically indicates that data could not be read because of a bad sector. The status 0xC000009A can indicate insufficient nonpaged pool resources, so not every status means the same thing.
If you have a status value, compare it with Microsoft’s 0x7A parameter and status-code documentation. Treat it as a clue, not a standalone diagnosis.
3. Back up important files if Windows still starts
If you can sign in, copy irreplaceable files to another drive or a trusted cloud backup before running a lengthy disk check. A check can help find file-system or sector problems, but it cannot restore data that is already unreadable or repair physically failing hardware. If the PC is unstable or the drive makes unusual noises, limit further use and seek qualified recovery or repair advice rather than repeatedly stressing it.

4. Run CHKDSK for a bad-sector status
For the specified bad-sector scenario, Microsoft recommends checking the system partition with chkdsk /f /r. The /f option fixes file-system errors and /r looks for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information. On a system volume, Windows may schedule the scan for the next restart; follow the prompt and allow the check to finish.
CHKDSK is not proof that a drive is healthy afterward. If errors return, the scan cannot complete, or 0x7A keeps recurring, move on to hardware diagnostics and protect your data.
5. Use the Recovery Console if Windows will not boot
If Windows cannot start, Microsoft documents chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console for the disk-error case. The exact route into Windows Recovery Environment can vary by Windows version and how the PC is configured. Use the recovery options provided for your Windows installation or computer, and confirm the correct Windows volume before running a command; drive letters in recovery may differ from their letters when Windows is running.

If you cannot identify the Windows volume or reach a command prompt, do not guess at a drive letter. Use the PC maker’s support instructions or a repair professional.

6. Run the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics
Use the diagnostics supplied by the computer manufacturer to check the system, especially its storage hardware. Follow the maker’s on-screen instructions and note any error codes or component names. Microsoft recommends manufacturer diagnostics because the stop code can result from defective storage hardware, but it does not specify one universal tool or menu path.
A diagnostic result indicating storage failure is a reason to discuss repair or replacement. Do not buy a drive based on 0x7A alone: the replacement must match the computer’s supported form factor and interface.

7. Test RAM with the manufacturer’s memory scanner
Failing RAM is another possible cause. Run the memory scanner provided or recommended by your computer manufacturer and record the result. A reported memory error is actionable evidence for repair or replacement; a clean test does not rule out every intermittent memory or other hardware fault.
8. Review System Event Viewer for clues
Look for system messages immediately before the blue screen in Event Viewer. A repeated message naming a storage device or another component may help direct further diagnostics. Treat event-log entries as clues rather than proof that the named device caused the crash; correlate them with the bug-check status and hardware tests.
9. Install available Windows updates
If Windows can start, install available Windows updates and restart. Microsoft includes updates among its troubleshooting actions for this bug check. Updates are a reasonable software-maintenance step, but they do not repair a physically failing drive or defective RAM.

10. Investigate other hardware or malware only when evidence supports it
Other hardware
Microsoft notes that defective hardware beyond the storage device or RAM, including a motherboard fault, can cause this stop code. If storage and memory checks do not explain recurring crashes, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or seek repair service rather than replacing parts at random.
Malware
Microsoft also lists virus infection as a possible cause. If there are other signs of infection or your security software flags a threat, run a scan with current antivirus software. The 0x7A code by itself is not evidence that malware is the cause.
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
- Prioritize copying important files while Windows remains accessible.
- Seek hardware service if manufacturer diagnostics report a failing drive, memory, or other component.
- If the scan reports bad sectors or the crashes continue after checks, do not assume CHKDSK has made the drive reliable.
- If Windows will not boot and you cannot safely identify the correct volume or run recovery tools, use the computer maker’s support or a qualified technician.
Microsoft’s general blue-screen troubleshooting guidance describes stop errors as serious problems that can cause Windows to shut down or restart to protect against data loss. It does not provide a universal 0x7A repair recipe for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
