Cat 8 is the fastest cited balanced twisted-pair Ethernet cable category: it supports 40GBASE-T at up to 40 Gb/s over a maximum 30 m link. For 10 Gb/s over a longer distance, Cat 6A is the relevant option in the cited comparison, supporting 10 Gb/s up to 100 m. The right choice depends on the required distance and whether the equipment at both ends supports that speed.
How Cat 8 and Cat 6A compare
| Category and use | Cited link rate | Cited maximum reach |
|---|---|---|
| Cat 8 for 25GBASE-T or 40GBASE-T | Up to 40 Gb/s | 30 m |
| Cat 6A | 10 Gb/s | 100 m |
IEEE 802.3bq-2016 specifies 40GBASE-T over balanced twisted-pair structured cabling for up to 30 m. IEEE Standards Association UL likewise identifies Category 8 for 25GBASE-T and 40GBASE-T transmission performance up to 2 GHz and a maximum length of 30 m. UL Solutions
For the Cat 6A comparison, Eaton lists 10 Gb/s at 100 m, and Cat 8 at 25/40 Gb/s over 30 m. Eaton

Which category fits your network?
Choose Cat 8 for a compatible short link
Cat 8 is the fit when the goal is a short 25 or 40 Gb/s twisted-pair link and the connected network equipment supports 25GBASE-T or 40GBASE-T. Its 40 Gb/s figure is tied to a maximum 30 m reach; it is not a 40 Gb/s, 100 m solution.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Choose Cat 6A when you need 10 Gb/s over more distance
If the requirement is a 10 Gb/s connection over a run of up to 100 m, Cat 6A matches the cited distance and rate. A higher category is not automatically a better fit when its short-run maximum is unnecessary.
Check the equipment and installation before buying
- Confirm the required rate. Check the Ethernet ports on both devices, along with any intervening switch or router. Those interfaces must support the target Ethernet rate; changing the cable alone cannot add faster ports.
- Measure the cable run. Compare the full link length with the category’s cited reach: 30 m for the Cat 8 25/40GBASE-T use case, or 100 m for Cat 6A at 10 Gb/s.
- Match the installation to the applicable requirements. The category’s stated performance depends on a compliant installed channel, not simply the label on a patch cable.
- Choose a cable category for the actual network. NETGEAR’s guidance is to select cabling based on the multi-gig speeds supported by the ISP or wired LAN devices. NETGEAR support guidance
What “fastest Ethernet cable” does—and does not—mean
Here, “fastest” means the highest cited Ethernet link rate for a balanced twisted-pair structured-cabling category. It does not describe every Ethernet medium: IEEE 802.3 also specifies Ethernet over fiber and other media. Nor does a faster cable category by itself make an internet connection faster or guarantee lower latency; the result depends on the network equipment, service, and link requirements.
