There is no one safety-gear kit that protects everyone in every situation. Start by identifying the hazard, then choose equipment designed for that exposure, sized to fit, and compatible with the other protection you need. Safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, hearing protection, hard hats, respirators, and protective clothing each address different risks; you do not automatically need every category.
Start with the hazard, not a gear bundle
Before choosing equipment, identify what could cause harm: flying particles or impact, chemical splashes, excessive noise, falling objects, electrical exposure, contaminated air, or another specific hazard. Then consider how you can reduce the exposure. OSHA’s 2023 Personal Protective Equipment publication describes PPE as part of a broader approach: control hazards at their source when possible, and use PPE when engineering or work-practice controls are infeasible or do not provide enough protection.
PPE is intended to minimize exposure, not make a hazardous task safe by itself. A high-visibility vest, for example, does not protect against impact, and a generic respirator is not suitable for every airborne hazard. Choose equipment for the actual task and the protection it is rated to provide.
Match protection to the body area and exposure
Eyes and face
Safety glasses, goggles, and face shields serve different purposes. Select eye protection according to the exposure, such as impact, particles, or splashes, and check that its markings or rating match the task. A face shield alone does not provide impact protection; OSHA’s PPE assessment guidance notes that safety spectacles or goggles may also be needed.

Hands and arms
Choose gloves for the material and hazard involved, rather than assuming one pair handles every task. The needed protection depends on the exposure, and gloves must fit and allow the wearer to do the work safely. Check the equipment’s stated limits and whether it is compatible with other required PPE.
Feet
Protective footwear should address the hazards present in the work area. Confirm that the footwear’s marking or rating fits the task and any applicable workplace or local requirements; the general PPE category alone does not identify the right specification.

Hearing
Earplugs and earmuffs are common forms of hearing protection. Choose a type suited to the noise exposure and the setting, and ensure it can be worn correctly alongside other equipment. A product category by itself does not establish that protection is adequate for a particular noise hazard.

Hard hats and other head protection must be appropriate to the specific hazard. For consumer activities such as cycling, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission cautions: “But, NO helmet or other form of head protection is concussion proof.” That limitation is not a reason to dismiss helmets; it means they cannot guarantee freedom from concussion.

Respiratory protection
Respirators must be selected for the airborne hazard and used within their stated limitations. Do not treat a generic mask or respirator as a universal answer to contaminated air. Workplaces and emergency-response settings may have requirements beyond this general guide; OSHA and NIOSH address PPE in their respective contexts.
Protective clothing
Protective clothing can help reduce exposure to particular hazards, but the garment must be suited to the material or conditions involved. Check its protection capability, fit, compatibility with other PPE, and care instructions.

Use this checklist before choosing PPE
- What specific hazard or exposure am I trying to reduce?
- Is this type of equipment intended for that hazard, and do its markings or rating match the task?
- Does it fit the wearer and work with the other required PPE?
- What are its limitations, inspection and maintenance needs, useful life, and replacement or disposal criteria?
- Does my job, activity, or local rule require a particular type or standard?
Fit, training, and maintenance matter
OSHA’s PPE overview says equipment should be safely designed, maintained in clean and reliable condition, and fit comfortably. Comfort and fit are practical safety considerations: equipment that interferes with the task or does not fit properly may not be used as intended.

When the setting has specific rules
This guide is general because the task and jurisdiction are not specified. OSHA and NIOSH materials primarily address work and emergency-response settings, while consumer activities may follow different guidance. For a particular job or activity, check the current rules and standards for that setting before selecting equipment. The CDC/NIOSH emergency preparedness PPE resource discusses equipment for emergency response and recovery workers.
