No. A pheromone or scent-lure bed bug trap can help detect activity, but it cannot promise to stop bites or eliminate an infestation. It is a monitor, not a treatment or a personal bite barrier. A positive catch is a reason to investigate; no catch does not prove a room is clear.

What a bed bug “pheromone trap” actually does

The name can be misleading. Bed bug monitors use different methods: some passively catch bugs moving between the floor and furniture, while active monitors try to draw bugs toward a trap using cues such as carbon dioxide, heat, or a scent lure. Not every product marketed as a pheromone trap uses the same ingredients or has been tested in the same way.

EPA describes bed bugs as being attracted to warmth, blood, and carbon dioxide—not dirt or grime. A lure is intended to help a monitor detect bugs, not to repel them from people. A trap cannot control where hungry bugs move well enough to guarantee that they will not reach a person.

What “pheromone” means in this context

An EPA newsletter published in Winter 2015 described work by Simon Fraser University scientists Gerhard and Regine Gries and chemist Robert Britton on a chemical attractant blend. The newsletter recounts that an earlier blend attracted bed bugs in laboratory experiments but failed in infested apartments until researchers found a missing component. That history explains why lure formulation matters; it does not establish that any particular retail trap works. Read the EPA newsletter account.

Studies have tested particular experimental lure mixtures. For example, one 2015 study described a mixture containing nonanal, L-lactic acid, 1-octen-3-ol, and spearmint oil. Those ingredients and results should not be assumed to apply to every product sold as a pheromone trap.

Passive interceptors and active monitors work differently

Passive interceptor traps

Interceptors sit under furniture legs. As bugs move between the floor and furniture, the trap can catch them, making it possible to inspect for activity. They do not lure bugs from across a room, and they work only where the furniture and placement allow bugs to encounter them.

Active monitors

Active monitors use an attractant or a combination of cues—such as carbon dioxide, heat, and scent—to draw bugs toward a capture device. Their performance depends on the specific design, lure, placement, and time deployed. “Active” does not mean the monitor can attract every bed bug or outcompete a sleeping person in every situation.

In a 2011 study in occupied apartments, researchers ranked the tested active monitors by catch as dry-ice trap, CDC3000, then NightWatch. In lightly infested apartments, a passive interceptor left in place for seven days caught a similar number of bugs to a dry-ice trap used for one day, and more than one-day deployments of CDC3000 or NightWatch. These were comparisons of specific devices and schedules, not a universal ranking of current products. See the 2011 monitor study.

What the lure studies show—and what they do not

In a 2013 study, adding an experimental chemical lure to a Climbup interceptor increased its catch 2.2 times under the study conditions. A 2015 study of a sugar-yeast monitor with an experimental lure found performance comparable to a dry-ice monitor using the same lure in naturally infested apartments. In pairwise comparisons when carbon dioxide was present, the experimental lure was associated with 7.2 times greater catch. The study also measured average carbon dioxide release during its first eight hours: 405.1 ml/min for the sugar-yeast mixture and 397.0 ml/min for dry ice. These are experimental results, not success rates for all retail traps. Read the 2013 lure study and the 2015 sugar-yeast study.

The studies support a narrower conclusion: trap design, lure, carbon dioxide, and deployment time can affect how many bugs a monitor catches. They do not establish a head-to-head ranking of every product currently sold, or show that a trap prevents bites.

How to use monitors without mistaking them for treatment

  1. Choose the monitor for the job. Interceptors are a practical option for checking activity around furniture legs. An active monitor may use carbon dioxide, heat, scent, or a combination; follow its own instructions rather than assuming all monitors operate alike.
  2. Place and leave it as directed. Positioning and deployment time matter. In the cited apartment comparison, the passive interceptor was monitored for seven days, while the dry-ice trap was used for one day. Do not assume a brief check is equivalent to a longer deployment.
  3. Inspect catches and keep monitoring. A monitor can help detect activity and track whether signs persist after treatment. EPA recommends continued monitoring as part of integrated pest management (IPM), including to check whether a population has been eliminated and to watch for reintroduction. EPA’s bed bug pesticide guidance was updated February 26, 2026.
  4. Get suspected activity confirmed. Bed bugs can be confused with other insects. EPA’s federal strategy advises confirmation by a qualified expert; consult a qualified pest management professional before committing to costly treatment. Read the federal bed bug strategy and EPA’s guidance on bed bug myths.
  5. Use monitoring as one part of IPM. A trap does not replace a treatment plan. EPA notes that treatment effectiveness can depend on the extent of infestation, preparation, coverage, which life stages are targeted, and pesticide resistance.

Mattress and box-spring encasements can make signs easier to see, according to the federal strategy, but they are not attractants or cures. They are a complementary aid, not a substitute for inspection and treatment.

What a catch—or no catch—can tell you

If a monitor catches a bug

A catch is evidence worth investigating, but have a qualified professional confirm a suspected infestation. Confirmation matters because other insects can be mistaken for bed bugs. A confirmed catch can also help you and a pest professional assess activity and follow progress after treatment.

If a monitor catches nothing

No catch is not proof that a room or home is bed bug-free. Bugs may not encounter the monitor during the deployment, and results depend on placement, time, and monitor design. Continue methodical monitoring and seek a professional inspection if you have other signs or a credible reason to suspect an infestation.

What to expect from a “best bed bug trap” search

There is no supported universal winner among current retail pheromone traps in the evidence cited here. The comparative studies date from 2011, 2013, and 2015 and tested specific equipment, lures, and deployment conditions; they do not establish current retail success rates, stock, or prices. For a practical choice, match the monitor type to the task: an interceptor for furniture-leg monitoring, or an active monitor when its particular cues and instructions suit the situation. Treat either as a detection tool, not bite prevention.
