A 2026 laboratory study proposes three molecules—diazene, ammonium cyanide and methyl cyanamide—as targets for future astronomical searches. The researchers formed them in hydrogen-cyanide ice analogues processed with energetic electrons. They did not detect the molecules in space, and the experiment is not evidence that life exists beyond Earth. One terminology correction matters: diazene is not a nitrile, so “nitrogen-bearing molecules” is the more accurate description.

Which molecules are proposed as search targets?

Jia Wang and coauthors identify three compounds as suitable targets for future astronomical searches: diazene (HNNH), ammonium cyanide (NH₄CN) and methyl cyanamide (CH₃NHCN). The paper states that they had not been detected astronomically at the time it was published. That describes their status then; it is not a guarantee that they remain undetected today.

The headline grouping of all three as nitriles is chemically imprecise. A nitrile contains a cyano group (–CN), but diazene has no such group. Calling the three “nitrogen-bearing molecules” avoids that error while describing the proposed targets accurately.

Were the molecules found in space?

No. The compounds were made or identified in laboratory ice experiments, not observed in an interstellar cloud. “Targets” means candidates for future searches, not confirmed astronomical discoveries. Establishing that one is present beyond Earth would require an astronomical observation; the laboratory result alone cannot do that.

How did the experiment simulate interstellar chemistry?

The researchers prepared low-temperature ice analogues from hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and irradiated them with energetic electrons. In space, galactic cosmic rays interacting with ice grains produce secondary electrons; the laboratory electrons served as proxies for that processing.

The authors calculated that their irradiation conditions corresponded to (3.0 ± 0.5) × 10⁷ years of galactic-cosmic-ray exposure, a model comparison intended to represent an evolved molecular-cloud stage. This is not a measured age or exposure history for any particular cloud.

To analyze the products, the team used vacuum-ultraviolet photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PI-ReTOF-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS). The study describes different detection routes and analytical stages; it does not claim that every compound was identified using every instrument.

What other compounds did the team report?

In addition to the three proposed search targets, the paper reports ammonia, methylamine, ethanimine, isocyanogen, cyanamide, iminoacetonitrile and N-cyanomethanimine. Taken together, the reported products include nitriles and other nitrogen-bearing compounds. The experiment therefore provides evidence that chemically relevant species and possible precursor pathways can form in HCN-rich ice under simulated energetic processing.

Why might this matter to life-hunting astronomers?

Nitriles can participate in chemical pathways leading to amino acids and nucleobases. Finding plausible routes for nitrogen-bearing compounds to form in icy environments gives astrochemical models experimental constraints and suggests molecules astronomers may choose to search for.

That is a result about chemistry, not biology. The study does not show that these compounds produced life on Earth or elsewhere, nor that life exists beyond Earth. As coauthor Ralf Kaiser told Chemistry World, “the reactions we are investigating have a wide application beyond our solar system.” The remark concerns the potential relevance of the chemistry, not evidence that life is widespread.

What the study establishes—and what remains open

  • Established in the laboratory: energetic-electron processing of HCN ice analogues produced or revealed a range of nitrogen-bearing compounds, including the three proposed targets.
  • Not established astronomically: the experiment did not detect diazene, ammonium cyanide or methyl cyanamide in space.
  • Not established biologically: chemical precursors associated with prebiotic chemistry are not life, and the result says nothing definitive about whether life exists elsewhere.
  • Not a cloud-age measurement: the reported cosmic-ray timescale is an equivalence calculated for laboratory conditions, not a direct observation of exposure in a molecular cloud.

The primary study is Jia Wang et al., “Abiotic formation of nitrile precursors to amino acids and nucleobases in interstellar ice analogues,” Chemical Science 17 (2026), 4966–4977. It was first published online on 5 January 2026 and appeared in the issue dated 11 March 2026. Read the study.
