NASA Johnson’s 16-member Dexterous Robotics Team develops robotic hardware and software for tasks people perform with their hands. It is an engineering team, not a consumer robot company: its work helps NASA programs and external partners test robots intended to operate in human environments and support human-supervised space exploration.
What does NASA Johnson’s Dexterous Robotics Team do?
The team is part of the Robotic System Technology Branch at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Its specialty is developing robots capable of human-like tasks—working in places designed for people or alongside them. The team combines expertise in mechatronics and software.
Team lead Shaun Azimi describes the aim as supporting, rather than replacing, human explorers: “Our team is not trying to replace human explorers with robots but instead make human exploration safer and more sustainable by developing highly capable, reliable, and trustworthy robots to work in extreme environments.”
NASA’s near-term focus is technology for a sustained human presence on the lunar surface, with potential relevance to future Mars missions. The source does not give a schedule for a Mars challenge or quantify robot reliability, performance improvements, or costs.

How do Robonaut 2 and Valkyrie fit into the team’s work?
The team’s experience includes Robonaut 2 and Valkyrie, two humanoid robotics projects whose technical legacy informs its ongoing work. NASA describes Robonaut 2 as having participated in robotics technology demonstrations aboard the International Space Station for seven years. NASA calls Valkyrie its first bipedal humanoid robot.
These examples establish the team’s background, but NASA’s profile does not report comparative test results or performance statistics for either robot. Nor does it identify a consumer version of Valkyrie or a product for readers to purchase.

What is iMETRO, and who can use it?
The Integrated Mobile Evaluation Testbed for Robotics Operations (iMETRO) is a Johnson Space Center facility available to NASA programs and external partners. It provides a place to evaluate robotic systems and components in settings and tasks relevant to human-supervised space exploration.
Its resources include open-source software and simulation assets, spacecraft and habitat mockups, house robots, and an outdoor rock yard. Teams can test a complete robot or focus on an individual hardware or software component. That flexibility lets users evaluate a system as a whole or examine one part without claiming a specific performance gain; NASA’s profile supplies no quantified outcomes.

What tasks have been demonstrated at iMETRO?
Operating a spacecraft hatch and moving cargo
In an example involving PickNik Inc., a robotic arm recognized a spacecraft hatch, turned its latch, grasped the handle, opened the hatch, and transferred cargo bags between the hatch and a bin. Azimi says iMETRO helps partners see concrete tasks NASA needs done “so they don’t have to speculate.”
Inspecting and maintaining a cold stowage freezer
In a separate example, an intern developed software for a commercial robotic arm and camera to inspect and maintain a cold stowage freezer like those aboard the space station. NASA’s profile describes the work, but does not provide measured results or establish that the system is a deployed operational service.
