In a specific temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) workflow for elemental analysis, “perfect peak separation” means a gas component is released only after the preceding gas peak has returned to baseline. That sequencing is intended to prevent the measured peaks from overlapping; it is not a universal guarantee for every chromatographic method or instrument.
What does “perfect peak separation” mean?
The phrase is used in a specialized context: measuring elements in a sample with an elemental analyzer. CHNS analysis determines the quantities of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur, helping assess a sample’s chemical composition and purity. The University of Padua Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences describes a TPD workflow in which gases are released at different temperatures, with release of the next gas held until the previous peak reaches baseline. The university says this avoids overlap. (University of Padua, “Elemental Analysis,” content dated June 21, 2024.)

In this context, “perfect” describes the intended separation behavior of the described workflow. It should not be read as a general scientific definition or as a claim that all real-world chromatographic peaks can be made to have zero overlap.
How the TPD separation works
-
The analyzer heats the prepared sample according to its method.

-
As the temperature changes, gases associated with the sample are released at different stages.
-
The next gas is released only after the preceding gas peak has returned to baseline, separating the measured signals rather than releasing them in an overlapping sequence.
Elementar describes dynamic heating in its vario ISOTOPE select analyzer: heating is not simply preprogrammed, but adjusted so target gases are released after the previous peak reaches baseline. The company says this provides full peak separation in simultaneous NCS analysis mode. That is a manufacturer claim about its instrument, not an independent comparative test. (Elementar, vario ISOTOPE select.)
What the available figures and claims establish
The University of Padua facility page reports a detection limit of 10 µg/g (10 ppm) for trace carbon and nitrogen for its named vario MicroCube analyzer. This figure is specific to that analyzer and the university’s description; it is not a general detection limit for CHNS analysis or a measure of peak separation by itself. (University of Padua, “Elemental Analysis,” content dated June 21, 2024.)
Elementar’s “complete peak separation” language likewise applies to its vario ISOTOPE select and the company’s stated operating approach. The available material does not establish a universal standard for “perfect” separation, an independent performance comparison across manufacturers, or a guarantee that every sample and method will produce identical results.

Peak separation is only one part of the analysis workflow. Elementar lists tools for compressing samples into tin foil or cups and a press for sealing tin or silver capsules. These accessories are relevant only if the analyzer and method call for compatible consumables; the listed capsule materials do not establish universal dimensions or fit across instruments.
