For U.S. residential washers, the broad efficiency ranking is: ENERGY STAR certified front-load first, top-load impeller second, and traditional top-load agitator third. ENERGY STAR’s comparisons put certified front-load washers at about 25% less energy and water use than top-load impeller washers and about 50% less than top-load agitator washers. These are program-level comparisons, not guaranteed savings for every model or household.

Washer types ranked from most to least efficient

The ranking reflects ENERGY STAR’s U.S. comparison of washer categories. It is a useful starting point, but the type alone cannot tell you which individual model will use the least energy or water.

1. Front-load washer: most efficient in the comparison

A front-loader tumbles clothes through a relatively small amount of water. ENERGY STAR says its certified front-load washers use about 25% less energy and water than top-load impeller washers and about 50% less than top-load agitator washers. Certified front-load models may also be stackable or designed for under-counter installation; those configurations are not, by themselves, evidence of better efficiency. ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer buying guidance provides the category comparisons.

2. Top-load impeller washer: middle of the ranking

An impeller washer uses a low-profile cone or disc instead of a tall central agitator. ENERGY STAR describes this design as a more efficient option than traditional top-load machines, while its comparison still places certified front-load washers ahead. Performance varies by model, so check the individual machine’s metrics.

3. Top-load agitator washer: least efficient in the broad ranking

This traditional top-load design uses a central agitator to move laundry through the wash. It is the baseline in ENERGY STAR’s comparison showing lower energy and water use for certified front-loaders. That does not mean every agitator model is inefficient or unable to qualify for ENERGY STAR; the model’s own data matter.

What the efficiency figures mean

ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance also gives broader comparisons: certified washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. For full-sized machines, it illustrates water use as 14 gallons per load for a certified washer versus 20 gallons per load for a standard machine. These are program comparisons, not fixed consumption rates for every model or laundry load.

  • IMEF (Integrated Modified Energy Factor): relates washer capacity to energy use, including the machine, hot water, remaining-moisture removal, and low-power modes. A higher IMEF indicates greater energy efficiency.
  • IWF (Integrated Water Factor): measures water consumption per cubic foot of capacity. A lower IWF indicates greater water efficiency.

ENERGY STAR’s criteria page, changed April 22, 2021, lists certification thresholds for residential models above 2.5 cubic feet: front-load models must have an IMEF of at least 2.76 and an IWF no higher than 3.2; top-load models must have an IMEF of at least 2.06 and an IWF no higher than 4.3. These are certification thresholds, not a guarantee that certified models perform equally in real homes. See the ENERGY STAR clothes-washer criteria.

How to choose an efficient washer

  1. Check current ENERGY STAR status. Confirm the exact model in the current listing rather than assuming every washer of a given design is certified.
  2. Compare IMEF and IWF. When comparing suitable models, look for a higher IMEF and lower IWF.
  3. Read the EnergyGuide label. Use its estimated annual energy use and operating cost to compare similar models. The estimate is a comparison aid, not a promise of your household’s bill.
  4. Match capacity to your usual loads and available space. A capacity that suits your laundry pattern may help avoid extra loads, but the amount of any savings depends on how the washer is used.
  5. Check local incentives separately. ENERGY STAR points consumers to a Rebate Finder, but eligibility and available offers depend on location and program rules.

The quoted percentages do not establish what a particular household will save. Actual results depend on the model, load pattern, and use; the reviewed guidance does not provide a household-specific savings figure.

What to use outside the United States

This ranking and its percentages are based on U.S. ENERGY STAR guidance. Natural Resources Canada also describes front-load tumbling and advanced top-load operation, but the material reviewed does not establish a single harmonized international ranking or equivalent percentages for every market. Outside the United States, compare the local energy label and the data for the exact model sold in your country. The U.S. Department of Energy’s consumer information describes federally covered clothes washers and standards activity; proposed changes should not be treated as finalized requirements.
