A small amine trigger can start a self-amplifying breakdown in a specially designed polyurethane: as the material degrades, it releases amines that promote further degradation. In a laboratory demonstration, a localized hexylamine trigger made a cross-linked gel analogue change visibly as the process spread. This is a result about an engineered material, not ordinary polyurethane in general.
What makes this polyurethane self-amplifying?
The polymer was designed with a base-sensitive, Fmoc-derived carbamate in every repeating unit. A base such as hexylamine initiates the reaction by removing a proton. The material then undergoes E1cB elimination and decarboxylation, releasing amines. Those amines act as bases that promote additional degradation, which releases more amines and continues the cycle.
The key idea is propagation: the trigger starts the process, while products of the breakdown help drive it onward through the designed material. The Chemistry World report describes this as an autocatalytic process.

What did the visible demonstration show?
To make the process observable, the researchers prepared a cross-linked polyurethane gel analogue containing bromothymol blue, a pH-sensitive indicator. They applied a localized hexylamine solution trigger. The report describes the gel changing from a yellow solid to a blue solution as degradation proceeded and amino groups formed.

This demonstration used a gel analogue to visualize the chemistry. It does not establish that a droplet would produce the same result in any commercial polyurethane product, or that all polyurethane materials respond this way.
What might the chemistry be useful for?
The report identifies two possible directions: improving the disposability of industrial polyurethanes and rapidly producing an amine base from the material’s breakdown products. These are proposed applications, not demonstrated industrial uses. The report does not establish a deployed waste-management process, a lifecycle advantage, or degradation under ordinary environmental conditions.
