Astronomers reported cyanocoronene, a seven-ring aromatic molecule, in observations of the cold molecular cloud TMC-1. The 2025 result expanded the roster of complex molecules identified in space, but the headline claim that it is “double the size” of the previous record holder needs a qualification: the cited study establishes its structure and seven rings, while the comparison’s size metric is not specified in the available source material.

What is cyanocoronene?

Cyanocoronene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with formula C24H11CN. Its structure contains seven interconnected benzene rings and a cyano group. PAHs are carbon-based molecules built from fused rings; the cyanocoronene result is notable because it extends the complexity of the aromatic molecules reported in interstellar space.

The study by Gabi Wenzel and coauthors reported the molecule in the Astrophysical Journal Letters in 2025. The paper is titled “Discovery of the Seven-ring Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Cyanocoronene (C24H11CN) in GOTHAM Observations of TMC-1”.

How did researchers identify it in TMC-1?

The detection relied on matching a laboratory reference spectrum to radio-telescope observations. A molecule emits or absorbs radiation at characteristic frequencies as it rotates, so researchers first need a dependable map of those frequencies before they can look for its signature in space.

  1. Measure the molecule in the laboratory. The team synthesized cyanocoronene and used rotational spectroscopy to measure and assign 71 transitions between 6.8 and 10.6 GHz.
  2. Search astronomical observations. They examined data from GOTHAM (GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting Aromatic Molecules), a survey of the cold, dark molecular cloud TMC-1 made with the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope.
  3. Check the combined signal. The researchers report several individually resolved transitions and an overall 17.3σ detection using spectral stacking and matched filtering.

In practical terms, the lab work supplied the spectral fingerprint; the telescope data were then tested for that fingerprint. The report of multiple resolved transitions and a combined statistical result makes the identification more informative than a claim based on one isolated signal.

What does the 17.3σ result mean?

The 17.3σ figure is the paper’s reported detection significance for the combined analysis. It describes the statistical strength of the detection under the study’s methods; it is not a measure of how much cyanocoronene exists compared with every other PAH, nor does it mean the molecule is 17.3 times more abundant than another substance.

The authors also derive a column density for cyanocoronene—the amount of the molecule along a line of sight through the cloud—and report that it is comparable to those of several smaller cyano-substituted PAHs: naphthalene, acenaphthylene, and pyrene. They discuss this as a contrast with the declining abundance at greater size and complexity observed for carbon chains. That comparison is specific to the reported molecules and does not establish that all large PAHs are abundant in space.

Is cyanocoronene really “double the size” of the previous record holder?

The NRAO described cyanocoronene in its June 2025 announcement as the largest individual PAH molecule confirmed in interstellar space at that time. Chemistry World’s 19 June 2025 headline called it “double the size” of the previous record holder. The primary study establishes cyanocoronene’s formula and seven-ring structure, but the cited source extracts do not define the metric behind “double.”

“Size” can refer to different comparisons, such as the number of atoms, rings, or a molecule’s physical dimensions. Without a stated metric and a specified previous molecule for that comparison, “double the size” should be treated as headline shorthand rather than a precise measurement. The firmly supported structural description is that cyanocoronene is a seven-ring PAH. The record claim is also time-bound: it reflects the announcement in 2025, not a guarantee that it remains the largest molecule detected today.

Why does this detection matter?

Finding cyanocoronene in TMC-1 shows that aromatic chemistry in a cold interstellar cloud can include a seven-ring PAH, not only smaller aromatic molecules. Its reported column density, comparable to several smaller cyano-substituted PAHs, gives researchers a specific observation to consider when evaluating how complex aromatic molecules form and persist in such environments.

Wenzel, identified by NRAO as a research scientist in MIT’s Department of Chemistry and the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, described the broader significance this way: “Each new detection brings us closer to understanding the origins of complex organic chemistry in the universe—and perhaps, the origins of the building blocks of life themselves.” This is a perspective on the direction of the research; the detection itself is not evidence of life or a direct pathway to its origins.
