Photograph flexible electronics at multiple scales: begin with a clear view of the whole device, then document traces, contacts and other details with close-up optics. Keep orientation and lighting consistent when comparing images, and include a scale reference when dimensions matter. There is no validated, universal camera-setting or lighting-angle recipe for this work; the right setup depends on the device and the purpose of the image.
What to capture
A useful set of photos should show both how the device is shaped and how its small features are arranged. Take the overview before repositioning or flattening the sample, then make close-ups that can be related back to the whole device.
- Whole-device view: Show the form, orientation, edges and major components. Use framing that makes the layout easy to understand.
- Detail views: Photograph traces, contacts, bends, connectors or other features that are too small to read in the overview.
- Scale: Add a scale reference in the image or figure when size is important. A published flexible-electronics figure, for example, uses a 1 cm scale bar for an optical photograph and a 5 mm scale bar for an image profile (source).
Choose close-up optics for the feature
For camera-based documentation, a macro lens is a practical route to close-ups. Select one that fits your camera mount and offers a useful working distance for the sample; the needed magnification depends on feature size. The University of Eastern Finland’s Center for Photonics Sciences lists specialty macro objectives and a motorized Leica Z6 APO zoom macroscope, illustrating the range of macro imaging equipment used in a research setting (Center for Photonics Sciences equipment). Sigma Connectivity likewise describes a precision close-up lab for macro photography (Sigma Connectivity).

A stable overhead mount or copy stand can help keep framing consistent. If features fall at different heights or the device curves, check that the parts you need to show are acceptably sharp rather than assuming one close-up will cover everything.

Control light and reflections
Flexible electronics may combine reflective contacts, traces, coatings and curved surfaces. Inspect the image for glare that hides a feature, and adjust the light position or diffusion to make the relevant details visible. Whether to use reflected or transmitted light depends on the sample and what you need to show; there is no evidence-backed universal angle for flexible-electronics photography.
Repeatable lighting matters especially for comparisons, such as images of multiple samples or before-and-after conditions. Sigma Connectivity describes controlled lighting setups, standardized reflective and transmissive targets, and a light booth for reproducing standard illuminants (Sigma Connectivity). EduceLab FLEX at the University of Kentucky documents high-resolution cameras and 16-band LED lighting panels spanning UV to near-infrared as part of a research imaging facility (EduceLab FLEX equipment). These are examples of specialized capabilities, not requirements for routine documentation.

Make comparisons repeatable
When images will be compared, keep the camera position, framing, device orientation and illumination as similar as practical. Capture the same views in the same order, and note any setup changes that could affect appearance. A copy stand or other fixed mount can make repeat framing easier; a controllable LED light can help reproduce illumination. These are practical options, not a prescribed or tested flexible-electronics protocol.

Match the setup to the purpose

What photographs can and cannot establish
Photographs document appearance, layout and visible features. They do not by themselves demonstrate electrical performance or microscopic material properties. The University of Eastern Finland facility lists imaging equipment alongside separate microscopy and electrical-testing capabilities, underscoring that visual documentation and characterization answer different questions (Center for Photonics Sciences equipment). Use the measurement or analysis method appropriate to the claim you need to support.
