Western Alliance Bank’s basic accounts are designed for everyday checking and savings, while its Premier accounts add relationship services for customers holding substantially larger balances. A separate product, High-Yield Savings Premier, advertises a higher savings rate but works through a linked external bank account rather than as a day-to-day transaction account. The right fit depends on your balance, fee-waiver eligibility, need for access, and the rate currently offered.

How do the basic checking accounts compare?
Personal Checking
Personal Checking is the straightforward option for customers who need transaction services rather than interest. Western Alliance says personal checking includes online banking, bill pay and eStatements. Forbes Advisor reports a $100 opening deposit and a $5 monthly fee, which it says can be waived with one recurring direct deposit or a $500 daily balance. Verify those fee terms in the bank’s current account-opening disclosures and Schedule of Fees.

Personal Interest Checking
Personal Interest Checking adds tiered interest but has a higher reported monthly fee. The bank’s rate sheet effective April 27, 2026 lists APY tiers from 0.25% below $10,000 up to 0.65% at $500,000 or more, with a $100 opening balance. Forbes Advisor reports a $10 monthly fee, waived for account holders age 55 or older or those maintaining a $500 daily balance. The yield and potential fee make the account most relevant if you can meet a waiver condition and keep a balance that earns meaningful interest.

How do basic savings and High-Yield Savings Premier differ?
Personal Savings
Personal Savings is the conventional savings option. The April 27, 2026 rate sheet lists a $100 opening balance and 0.05% APY. Forbes Advisor reports a $3 monthly fee that can be waived with a $250 daily balance. For a modest balance, compare the fee and waiver requirement with the account’s interest earnings before choosing it.
High-Yield Savings Premier
High-Yield Savings Premier is a separate online savings offer, not the same account as Premier Savings. Western Alliance advertised 3.80% APY and a $500 opening amount on its product page accessed October 7, 2026; it states there is no minimum balance to maintain after opening and no account fee. The bank’s page references national-average data accurate June 15, 2026, but the APY itself is variable and may change.

This account is less convenient for immediate spending: applicants must link an existing external checking or savings account, only one linked account is allowed, and deposits and withdrawals move through that account. Western Alliance says ACH funds generally become available for withdrawal five business days after transfer initiation. It does not provide checks or a debit card.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, at least 18, and provide a Social Security number and U.S. residential address. The account opens with $500. The bank states that deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per account owner, subject to ownership categories and aggregate coverage rules; consult the FDIC for how coverage applies to your circumstances.

What do Premier accounts add—and what balance do they require?
Premier Checking and Premier Savings are relationship accounts, not simply higher-rate versions of the basic accounts. Western Alliance lists a $150,000 opening balance and says monthly maintenance fees are waived when balances exceed $150,000. Premier Savings includes a dedicated relationship banker, priority phone support, two complimentary wire transfers per month, online and mobile banking, Bill Pay, and relationship mortgage and HELOC rates. The bank directs prospective customers to a banker for current rate tiers and full fee schedules.
The April 27, 2026 rate sheet lists combined Premier tiers of 0.65% APY below $150,000, 3.38% from $150,000 to $499,999, 3.64% from $500,000 to $999,999, and 3.12% at $1 million or more. These dated published tiers are not a promise that Premier earns more at every balance: the listed rate at $1 million and above is lower than the preceding tier. Confirm the applicable balance bands and live rate directly with the bank before moving funds.

How to choose between basic, high-yield and Premier banking
- Choose Personal Checking if you mainly need everyday transactions and can satisfy a fee-waiver condition.
- Consider Personal Interest Checking if you want interest on checking balances and can avoid its reported monthly fee; compare the current tier against alternatives.
- Consider Personal Savings for conventional savings access, but account for its reported fee and low dated APY.
- Consider High-Yield Savings Premier if you can leave the money in savings, maintain an external linked account, and accept transfer delays instead of debit-card or check access.
- Ask about Premier if your balances meet the substantial opening requirement and relationship services, wires or lending terms have value to you. Compare the current rate and fee schedule, not just the account label.
Before applying, compare the opening amount, ongoing balance needed to avoid fees, current APY and tiers, how quickly withdrawals become usable, and whether the service features match how you bank. For general product information, Western Alliance’s personal banking page links to its account options.
