A 2016 materials study demonstrated a polymer that switches from green to sandy brown when its electrical state changes. Researchers applied it to conductive fabric, but this was a laboratory proof of concept—not a self-adjusting camouflage suit available to buy or evidence of field-ready clothing.
What did the 2016 camouflage study demonstrate?
The study, “Side-chain engineering of green color electrochromic polymer materials: toward adaptive camouflage application,” was published by Hongtao Yu and colleagues in Journal of Materials Chemistry C in 2016. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s summary describes a polymer that appears green in its reduced state and sandy brown after oxidation under a low voltage. Those two colors were presented as relevant to contrasting settings such as vegetation and desert.
This is an electrically driven color change, not evidence that the material detects its surroundings and selects a matching color by itself. The study’s framing points toward adapting a garment when its environment changes; the available reports do not establish automatic sensing, a range of patterns, or a complete camouflage system. How was the colour-changing fabric made?
According to Chemistry World, the demonstration used conductive fabric as an electrode. The researchers sprayed it with a mixture of the polymer and toluene. This shows a route for applying the active material to a fabric substrate; it does not establish a scalable clothing-manufacturing process or a finished garment.

How quickly did it switch, and what other properties were reported?
Chemistry World reported a switching time of 1–1.5 seconds and retained activity after 1,000 repetitions. These are figures reported for the 2016 material demonstration, not independent measures of service life or proof of durability in field use. The same report describes infrared absorption and a super-hydrophobic surface property. Neither property, on its own, establishes concealment from all sensors, resistance to weather or laundering, or dependable performance as clothing.
How does it differ from ordinary camouflage clothing?
Conventional camouflage clothing uses a fixed printed pattern. The research instead explores an electrically switched color layer that can change between green and sandy brown. The available sources do not provide a head-to-head test, so they do not show which approach conceals a wearer more effectively in any particular environment.

Nor do the reports establish multi-pattern resolution, full-spectrum camouflage, battlefield efficacy, or a system that senses terrain and changes automatically. A two-color material demonstration is not the same as making a person invisible across varied backgrounds or sensors.

Can you buy a suit made from this polymer?
The sources describe a research material and an experimental conductive-fabric demonstration, not a marketed garment. They do not document field testing, production at scale, or a supplier selling clothing made with this specific polymer. The result is therefore best understood as an early materials proof of concept, rather than a currently purchasable adaptive camouflage product.
