Laser spectroscopy did not photograph a nobelium nucleus. By measuring how light interacts with a few atoms of different nobelium isotopes—and interpreting the resulting spectra with atomic-structure calculations—researchers inferred changes in nuclear size and shape, as well as information about nuclear moments.

What did laser spectroscopy reveal about nobelium nuclei?

The 2018 study reported differential mean-square charge radii for the nobelium isotopes 252No, 253No and 254No. Comparing those radii gives insight into how the nuclei’s sizes change across the isotopes. The researchers also evaluated the hyperfine splitting of 253No, which provides complementary evidence about its quadrupole deformation and information about the neutron single-particle wave function through nuclear spin and magnetic moment. These are properties inferred from atomic spectra and calculations, not direct images of nuclei.

The findings belong to a two-stage story. In 2016, researchers first identified a ground-state atomic transition in nobelium using atom-at-a-time resonance ionization spectroscopy. The 2018 work then used laser spectroscopy and atomic calculations to investigate nuclear properties. The later study was not the first observation of a nobelium atom or the first laser spectroscopy of the element.

How do atomic spectra reveal nuclear size?

Isotope shifts connect frequencies to nuclear changes

Atoms absorb or emit light at characteristic transition frequencies. Isotopes of the same element have different nuclei, so the transition frequencies can shift slightly from one isotope to another. Researchers measure those isotope shifts in the atomic spectrum and use atomic-structure calculations to interpret them. From that comparison, they can extract changes in mean-square nuclear charge radius.

The laser measures the spectrum; it does not directly measure a nucleus’s outline. The nuclear-size result depends on interpreting the observed shifts with calculations. Isotope shifts therefore provide evidence about changes in size, but do not by themselves display a nuclear shape.

Hyperfine splitting adds information about nuclear moments

Hyperfine splitting is a separation of atomic spectral levels associated with interactions involving nuclear properties. In the 2018 nobelium study, evaluating the splitting in 253No offered a complementary route to information about quadrupole deformation. Together with nuclear spin and magnetic-moment information, it also helped constrain the neutron single-particle wave function.

Why were the measurements difficult?

Nobelium is radioactive and produced in exceptionally small quantities, so researchers must work with very few atoms and measure them promptly. Chemistry World’s 2018 account of the experiment reported a maximum of four nobelium ions per second, from a calcium-ion flux of around 4.4 × 1012 particles per second. Those figures describe the reported experiment, not a universal production rate for nobelium.

How the 2016, 2018 and 2024 results differ

Study What was measured or reported What it established
2016 Atom-at-a-time resonance ionization spectroscopy of nobelium Identified the atomic ground-state transition from 1S0 to 1P1, opening experimental access to the atomic structure of an element heavier than fermium. Nature (2016)
2018 Laser spectroscopy and atomic-structure calculations for 252No, 253No and 254No Reported differential mean-square charge radii and evaluated hyperfine splitting in 253No to investigate nuclear size, shape and moments. Physical Review Letters (published 8 June 2018)
2024 Extended isotope-shift data in nobelium and measurements across fermium isotopes Reported smooth nuclear-size evolution reproduced by a range of energy-density-functional models, and discussed diminished shell effects on size evolution compared with lighter nuclei. This is later context, not a result of the 2018 study. Nature (2024)

What the “first glimpse” means

The phrase refers to the first nuclear-structure information obtained for nobelium through laser spectroscopy—not to seeing a nucleus directly. The 2016 milestone established an atomic transition; the 2018 measurements used spectral shifts and atomic calculations to infer nuclear radii and moments. Later work continued to extend isotope-shift measurements, including the 2024 study of fermium and nobelium.

  • The spectroscope is made of optical glass. The composite prism and converging lens are installed in the vertical tube. Hold the spectroscope tube, the slit facing the light, a parallel beam is generated from the slit and converging lens. When the parallel beam pass through the prism, the dispersion spectrum can be directly observed. If the is fluorescent light, against the background of the continuous spectrum, one can see spectra of mercury (three straight lines).
