A tea-based laboratory coating uses the same tendency that makes tea stain surfaces to help a hybrid material adhere. The reported formulation combines brewed tea with cinnamaldehyde essential oil and a copper or silver salt. Researchers reported antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, but the findings do not establish a household disinfectant or clinically approved treatment.
How can tea stains help a coating stick?
The idea is to use tea’s familiar staining behavior as an adhesion aid: compounds in brewed tea can leave a persistent mark on surfaces, and the study applies that property in a hybrid nanocoating. The coating is not simply dried tea. The formulation described in the abstract also includes cinnamaldehyde essential oil and either a copper or silver salt. The available abstract does not provide enough detail to explain the precise chemical interactions or application procedure.
The paper, “Tea–Essential Oil–Metal Hybrid Nanocoatings for Bacterial and Viral Inactivation,” was published in ACS Applied Nano Materials. Its abstract reports adhesion on silicon, glass, polyester, nonwoven polypropylene, PTFE, and cotton. Those are laboratory-paper results, not confirmation that the material will adhere durably under everyday use. Read the paper record at ACS.
What antibacterial effect did the study report?
The paper’s search-result abstract reports strong antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) and Staphylococcus aureus (a Gram-positive bacterium). That supports describing the formulation as promising antibacterial research, not as a proven way to prevent infection. The available account does not establish long-term durability, safety for people in a particular use, or effectiveness in real-world infection control.
#1 Best Overall
- EFFORTLESS CLEANING -- Lifeproof Home Ceramic Coating prevents stains, smudges, fingerprints, water-spotting, soap-scum build-up, mineral build-up & more. When surfaces do get dirty, wipe away with ease! Protects surfaces for up to 6-12 months.
- SUPER-SLICK, ANTI-STICK, & ULTRA HYDROPHOBIC -- Lifeproof Home gives surfaces that super-slick, clean glass feeling, repelling liquids, stains, and other unwanted elements. DO NOT USE ON FLOORS due to super slick properties.
- MULTI-SURFACE SAFE -- Lifeproof Home is invisible and safe to use on nearly any hard surface including granite counters, stainless steel, appliances, laminate, marble, glass, metal, tile, porcelain, stone, painted cabinets, coriander, and many other home, kitchen, & bath surfaces.
- NON-TOXIC COATING -- Rest easy knowing your surfaces are protected in a non-toxic coating. Lifeproof Home has passed MTT Cytotoxicity testing.
- EASY SPRAY APPLICATION -- Starting with a cleaned surface, simply spray on desired surface, buff in with included microfiber towel, flip towel and remove any residue. Let cure (wait 1 hour for dry use, 4 hours for wet). Lifeproof Home coating can be removed anytime with Isopropyl alcohol. For best results, ensure surface is cleaned thoroughly before application.
“Antibacterial” also needs to be distinguished from a general promise to disinfect. The reported result concerns the tested coating and organisms; it does not show that tea alone kills bacteria, that every version of the coating works equally well, or that it is suitable for surfaces people touch or for medical use.
How this formulation differs from other tea-based research
Tea appears in several distinct lines of materials research. Their ingredients, substrates, tests, and measured outcomes differ, so their results should not be treated as direct comparisons or evidence for the brewed-tea hybrid coating.

- CREATES AN INVISIBLE SHIELD ON TREATED SURFACES that inhibits the growth of microorganisms and helps prevent the growth and spread of bacteria for up to 3 months, antimicrobial fabric spray for long-lasting surface safety.
- KEEPS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SURFACES of almost any type and material mold, mildew, algae and fungi free for up to 3 months using anti mold spray protection and durable surface care.
- WATERPROOF, WEATHERPROOF AND WON’T wash or wear off with normal maintenance or cleaning, ensuring lasting performance even when used with mold and mildew spray applications.
- PROTECTS AGAINST AND INHIBITS the development of microbiologically induced corrosion, stains, fading and odors, providing reliable performance in areas like mold spray bathroom.
- COMPARE LABELS! Most antimicrobial products are ONLY effective on “Hard, NonPorous Surfaces” (i.e., floors & countertops), but SHIELD is antimicrobially effective on the things we touch most: “Soft Surfaces” (furniture, carpets, bedding, clothes, backpacks, etc.) and “Food Contact Surfaces” (anything used to prep, cook or consume food).
- Green-tea-extract coatings: A 2022 study by Jihyo Park and colleagues compared nano-thin coatings made with decaffeinated green-tea extract (dGT) and raw green-tea extract (GT). The PubMed abstract says dGT performed better than GT in bacterial killing and preventing bacterial attachment. It describes possible medical-implant use as a future development direction, not an established application. See the PubMed record.
- Tea-processing waste on cotton: A 2020 study by Fazlıhan Yılmaz and Muhammed İbrahim Bahtiyari tested cotton dyed with tea- or tobacco-processing waste, using the waste directly or as extracts. In the reported tests, tea-processing waste prepared at 80°C reduced S. aureus by 99.99% and E. coli by 90%. After five wash cycles, the reported reductions were 99.99% and 65%, respectively. The researchers used ASTM E2149-01 after 24 hours of contact; results varied with the waste, preparation, temperature, and bacterium. These percentages describe those treated cotton samples and conditions, not the central nanocoating or a general product guarantee. See the study record.
- Tea residue in packaging film: A 2024 paper studied the waste aqueous phase from hydrothermal carbonization of tea residue as an ingredient in active packaging films. Its abstract reports antibacterial activity in a polyvinyl-alcohol film formulation and a banana-preservation test. This is packaging research using tea residue, not the tea-stain adhesion approach. See the PubMed record.
- Tea stains as a test soil: In a separate 2011 study, researchers used tea stains to track self-cleaning by titanium-dioxide-treated cotton under illumination. The tea stain was what the coating removed; it was not the basis of the coating. The study also reported antibacterial performance. See the study record.
- Tea polyphenol and zinc: A 2025 PubMed record describes a tea-polyphenol and zinc-ion nanocomposite coating investigated for fruit preservation. It is another research direction, not proof that the hybrid coating is commercially available. See the PubMed record.
Can you make or use it at home?
The studies described here do not establish a consumer-ready tea-based surface treatment, a home-use recipe, or a retail product. The central formulation includes more than tea, and the evidence available does not provide a validated household application method or safety instructions. Brewing tea or applying it to a surface should not be expected to create the reported coating or provide reliable disinfection.
The ACS article page was not accessible in the available record, so details of the central formulation are limited to the publisher’s search-result abstract. The available records also do not establish regulatory clearance or clinical efficacy for the coating.
