A 2012 laboratory study reported a preliminary antimicrobial “hit” in a family of chiral imidazolium ionic liquids—sometimes called designer solvents. Some compounds in the tested series were active against MRSA, but the finding was not a treatment or evidence of effectiveness in people.
What “designer solvent” means here
The phrase refers to an ionic liquid, a salt in the imidazolium family. Researchers synthesized and screened a series of chiral imidazolium salts for toxicity to bacteria and fungi. The work was published in Green Chemistry on 15 March 2012; it is a report of laboratory research, not a current clinical announcement. Royal Society of Chemistry paper
What the researchers found
The Royal Society of Chemistry reports that the study screened 8 bacterial strains and 12 fungal strains. Most of the salts were nontoxic to the organisms tested at IC95 greater than 2 mM. Two compounds were highly toxic to Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). These are results from the reported assays, not clinical outcomes. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s summary says both highly active compounds had a phenylalanine motif next to the cation core. An analogue with a phenylalanine-phenylalanine sequence was less active and did not show MRSA selectivity. The paper also describes preliminary structure–activity observations involving the placement of L-phenylalanine and L-valine groups. These comparisons concern this particular series; they do not establish a general rule for ionic liquids or antimicrobial design. Royal Society of Chemistry Green Chemistry Blog

What the biodegradation result does—and does not—show
Two tested bromide ionic liquids containing L-phenylalanine residues achieved greater than 60% biodegradation in 28 days in the ISO 14593 CO2 Headspace test, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2012 report. The authors described those compounds as readily biodegradable. That result applies to the two tested compounds under the specified assay; it does not show that ionic liquids as a class are biodegradable or environmentally harmless. Why this is not an MRSA treatment
Activity in a laboratory screen is an early research signal. The reported findings do not demonstrate that a compound can safely reach or work at an effective dose in a person, nor do they establish human efficacy, clinical readiness, regulatory approval, or availability as a medicine. The sources describing this 2012 study do not establish whether the compound later entered clinical development or became a marketed treatment.
