Yes: most meteorites found on Earth are pieces of asteroids, but not all. Some came from the Moon or Mars. Scientists work out a meteorite’s likely origin by combining clues such as its path through space, its chemistry, and gases trapped inside it.
What makes a meteorite different from a meteor?
The terms describe different stages of a space rock’s journey. A meteoroid is the object while it is in space. When it enters an atmosphere and creates a bright streak of light, that visible event is a meteor. Any material that survives the passage and reaches the ground is a meteorite. The flash is not itself a meteorite. NASA explains the distinction and the journey from space to surface.
Where do meteorites come from?
Most meteorites found on Earth originated in shattered asteroids. Collisions broke pieces from their parent bodies, and some fragments eventually crossed Earth’s path. A smaller number of meteorites came from the Moon or Mars, after impacts blasted material from those worlds into space.

One specific asteroid connection is Vesta: NASA identifies it as the source of the howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) group of meteorites. This is why “chip off the old asteroid block” is a good description for most meteorites, provided “most” is not mistaken for “all.”

How can scientists tell where a meteorite came from?
Appearance alone is not enough to establish a meteorite’s source. Scientists look for several lines of evidence that point to the same parent body:
- Observed path: If a meteorite’s fall was observed and its trajectory can be calculated, researchers can project its orbit backward. Some reconstructed paths point toward the asteroid belt.
- Composition: Researchers compare the meteorite’s materials and chemistry with the characteristics of asteroid classes.
- Trapped gases: Gases preserved in some Martian meteorites can be compared with measurements of Mars. A match supports a Martian origin.
These are complementary clues, not a single visual test. NASA describes these approaches in its overview of meteorites and their origins.

What can meteorite types reveal?
Meteorites are broadly grouped as stony, iron, or stony-iron, according to their composition. Those categories can preserve clues about the conditions and changes inside their parent bodies.

| Stony | Stony meteorites make up most observed falls. Their minerals preserve information about the material from which their parent bodies formed. |
| Iron | Iron meteorites are largely iron-nickel metal. In a melted, differentiated asteroid, dense metal sank toward the core, so iron meteorites can provide samples of that interior. Their Widmanstätten pattern forms as iron-nickel minerals intergrow during very slow cooling. |
| Stony-iron | This broad category combines stony material and metal; NASA’s cited descriptions establish the category but do not provide a single specific parent-body interpretation for all stony-iron meteorites. |
NASA’s Johnson Space Center Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science division describes meteorite groups and the evidence preserved in iron meteorites in its meteorite overview.

Why do iron meteorites seem common among finds?
What people find long after a fall is not the same as what falls most often. Stony meteorites account for most falls, but iron meteorites are more likely to be recognized in later searches: their metallic appearance makes them easier to distinguish, and they resist weathering better. A collection of meteorites found years after landing therefore does not represent the proportions of incoming meteorites.
What happens during atmospheric entry?
Entry into an atmosphere can break up and destroy much of an incoming space rock. NASA says most space rocks smaller than a football field break apart during entry, and usually less than five percent of the original object reaches the ground. Those figures are broad descriptions on NASA’s facts page, not a prediction for every object; survival depends on the object and its passage through the atmosphere.
Why are meteorites scientifically valuable?
Meteorites preserve material from the early solar system and from the bodies that formed within it. Studying their composition and age helps researchers investigate the solar system’s ingredients and history, conditions inside asteroids, and the effects of past impacts. An iron meteorite, for example, can preserve evidence of metal that settled toward a melted asteroid’s core, while other meteorites retain information about different source materials and processes.
