If browser voice interaction fails after you call getUserMedia(), the permission prompt is only one part of the story. A working voice path depends on a secure origin, permission and device availability, the audio track the browser actually provides, playback rules, and—when automated—how the test browser and audio devices are configured. Diagnose those layers separately instead of treating every failure as a microphone-permission problem.

Why can’t the browser capture microphone audio?

Start with the conditions for creating a media stream. Permission, a usable input device, and a valid request are separate requirements; resolving one does not guarantee the others.

1. Calling getUserMedia() from an insecure origin

Microphone capture requires a secure context. On an insecure page, navigator.mediaDevices may be unavailable, so check the page’s origin and whether the API exists before investigating audio constraints. A missing mediaDevices object is a different problem from a user denying access.

2. Assuming localhost proves the production setup is secure

Localhost is treated as a secure context, but that does not establish that a deployed site meets secure-context requirements. Test the actual production origin as well as local development; a successful local microphone prompt is not proof that capture will be available after deployment.

3. Treating the permission request as immediate

The user may leave a browser permission prompt unanswered. Represent capture as pending until the request resolves or rejects; do not assume that a request will synchronously succeed or quickly return an error. In a voice interface, make the waiting state visible and avoid starting dependent work as if a stream already exists.

4. Reporting every capture failure as “permission denied”

Permission denial, no matching input device, and a constraint the browser cannot satisfy are different failure classes. Preserve the error information and report a useful diagnosis rather than flattening all failures into one message. For example, tell the user to allow access for a permission failure, check input-device availability when no device matches, and review mandatory constraints when the request cannot be met.

5. Requesting microphone access inside an iframe without delegation

An embedded frame cannot assume it has the top-level page’s microphone access. The embedding page may need to delegate microphone access through Permissions Policy, and the frame still has to satisfy the relevant origin and secure-context requirements. For example, the embedding markup may need an allow="microphone" attribute; check the host page’s policy and the frame’s own origin rather than troubleshooting only the code inside the frame.

6. Equating permission with an available microphone

A user can grant permission even when no usable or matching input is available. Treat the permission decision and successful stream acquisition as separate checks. If access was granted but the request still fails, investigate device availability and constraints instead of asking the user to grant the same permission again.

Why do microphone constraints and echo cancellation behave differently than requested?

Constraints describe preferences or requirements for the track, not a guarantee that every browser and device will provide identical audio processing. Compare what you requested with what the active track reports.

7. Making every constraint mandatory

Ordinary constraint values can express preferences, while exact, minimum, or maximum forms can impose requirements. If a mandatory requirement cannot be met, stream creation can fail; a preference gives the browser more room to choose a workable configuration. Make a setting mandatory only when your application genuinely cannot operate without it.

8. Assuming a recognized constraint is supported in this environment

A browser recognizing a constraint name does not mean the active browser-and-device combination supports every value or can deliver the behavior you want. Check supported constraints where useful, then validate the result on the browser and input device that matter to your users. Support can vary across those environments.

9. Assuming the requested settings are the actual settings

After acquiring a stream, inspect the selected audio track’s settings. The resulting track—not the original request—is the evidence for what the browser supplied. If a setting differs from your expectation, use that result to guide the next diagnosis rather than assuming the browser honored the request exactly.

10. Expecting echoCancellation: true to guarantee a particular AEC result

Echo cancellation is browser-mediated processing. A request for it does not specify a particular algorithm or guarantee that a particular sound will be removed. Results and availability can differ by browser and environment, so test the actual voice path rather than interpreting a successful capture request as proof that acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) worked.

11. Requiring an exact AEC mode when a preference would work

An exact AEC requirement can make capture fail if the requested mode is unavailable. If the application can tolerate the browser’s best available behavior, use a preference instead of forcing an exact value. If it cannot, handle an unsatisfied requirement explicitly and explain that the current browser or device cannot provide the required mode.

12. Treating noise suppression as a universal fix for poor input

Noise suppression is a separate processing setting from echo cancellation. It filters background noise, but it is not a guaranteed cure for a noisy room, a poor microphone, or every audio problem. Check whether the setting is supported and what the active track reports in the target environment; also verify that the issue is background noise rather than echo, clipping, or missing input.

13. Creating acoustic feedback while monitoring the microphone

If you play captured microphone audio through speakers, that sound can re-enter the microphone and create a feedback loop. Use headphones when monitoring locally, and distinguish this acoustic feedback from an AEC failure: feedback can arise from the way the test is routed even when capture itself is working.

Why does audio stay silent after capture, or fail only in automation?

Capturing audio and playing audio are separate operations. Automated tests add another distinction: granting permission does not supply an input signal or prove that output is audible.

14. Assuming successful capture means playback will start

Media-element playback and Web Audio can be subject to autoplay restrictions. A microphone stream can exist while playback remains blocked. Start playback in response to a user gesture where needed, and handle a rejected playback request or blocked audio context as its own state instead of reporting it as a microphone failure.

15. Treating a Playwright permission grant as end-to-end audio simulation

Playwright can grant microphone permission for a browser context, with permissions scoped to an origin where applicable. That grant addresses permission; it does not create a physical or virtual input device, feed audio into the page, or demonstrate audible output. Test those pieces separately: permission, an available test input, and the application’s response to actual audio. Confirm that the permission-grant API and permission support match the Playwright version and browser you run.

16. Treating every headless browser and audio configuration as equivalent

“Headless Chromium” does not describe one invariant test environment. Playwright distinguishes the Chromium headless shell from the newer headless mode selected with the chromium channel; the modes can behave differently. Playwright also documents --mute-audio among default launch arguments that can be filtered. Verify the browser build and audio configuration used by the test rather than inferring microphone capture or audible playback from the fact that a headless test passed.

Which automated browser setup should you test?

Choose the configuration based on what the test must establish. No one mode proves every part of a voice interaction, and the available evidence does not support calling one headless mode universally more accurate for microphone capture.

Test choice What it helps you check What it does not establish by itself
Playwright Chromium headless shell Behavior in Playwright’s headless-shell mode. That the newer headless mode or a user’s branded browser behaves identically.
Newer headless mode using the chromium channel Behavior in Playwright’s newer headless mode. That the headless shell behaves identically, or that a microphone input is available.
Branded Chrome or Edge A production-channel check when browser branding or media-codec fidelity matters. That every device, permission state, or audio-output path is represented.
Permission grant only Whether the test context has the required microphone permission. That audio is being captured, that AEC is effective, or that output is audible.
Permission plus test input and playback check Separate checks of permission, input delivery, and the application’s playback path. That other browser builds or user audio setups behave the same way.

Keep browser installations current, as Playwright recommends, and run the browser configuration that corresponds to the behavior you need to validate. If codec or production-channel fidelity is the concern, include the branded browser rather than assuming bundled Chromium represents it. For a complete voice-path test, verify the permission grant, the presence of a usable input, and playback as distinct outcomes.

How should you isolate a voice-interaction failure?

  1. Check the page context. Confirm that the actual page origin is secure and that navigator.mediaDevices is available.
  2. Check permission and embedding policy. Determine whether the user granted access and, for an embedded page, whether the top-level policy delegates microphone access.
  3. Check device availability and request constraints. Separate permission failures from missing input and unsatisfied mandatory settings; avoid treating every setting as a hard requirement.
  4. Inspect the acquired track. Compare the requested audio properties with supported constraints and the track’s actual settings.
  5. Test processing and acoustics separately. Evaluate AEC and noise suppression on the target setup, and eliminate speaker-to-microphone feedback when monitoring.
  6. Test playback on its own. Trigger playback in the appropriate user-gesture context and handle autoplay or Web Audio restrictions independently of capture.
  7. Reproduce the automated environment. Record whether the run uses the headless shell, newer headless mode, or branded browser; check for audio muting and provide a real or virtual test input when the test needs one.

This order narrows the fault to the layer that failed: origin, permission, input, track configuration, processing, playback, or test environment. A successful permission grant proves only that permission was granted.
