A 2004 laboratory study described an electrochemical biosensor that detected cholera toxin by using ganglioside GM1 on lipid microstructures. When toxin bound to GM1, the Faradaic current measured at a gold electrode changed. The report documents a research design and its laboratory results; it does not establish a commercial diagnostic or a field-ready test.
How does the cholera toxin sensor work?
In the design reported by Quan Cheng and co-authors, the toxin-recognition element was ganglioside GM1, a cell-surface ligand that cholera toxin binds. The researchers displayed GM1 on redox-functionalized diacetylene lipid microstructures attached to a gold electrode.
- Recognition: Cholera toxin binds to GM1 on the lipid microstructures.
- Signal change: The binding alters the Faradaic current associated with electron transfer at the electrode–microstructure interface.
- Measurement: The researchers measured that current using differential pulse voltammetry.
The paper describes the structures as platelet-shaped and about 240 nm in size, characterized using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. That figure refers to the experimental microstructures, not to the dimensions of a finished sensor device.

The paper reported a working concentration range of 1.0 × 10−8 to 5.0 × 10−7 M under the study’s laboratory conditions. It used bovine serum albumin as a control and reported no interference with the Faradaic response across that same range. The authors also reported that their design bypassed protein surface fouling and proposed a binding-regulated electron-hopping mechanism to explain the signal.

These are findings and an interpretation from the reported laboratory study. The concentration range is not a measure of clinical sensitivity or diagnostic accuracy, and the paper does not establish speed, field robustness, or performance against current tests.
Can a sensor detect cholera toxin?
Yes. This particular research report describes detection through GM1 binding and an electrochemical current change at a gold electrode. Its results show a laboratory biosensor concept, not evidence that a ready-to-use diagnostic is available. The sources do not establish whether the design was later commercialized, clinically validated, deployed in the field, or given regulatory clearance.

The primary paper, “Functional lipid microstructures immobilized on a gold electrode for voltammetric biosensing of cholera toxin,” was published in Analyst, volume 129, pages 309–314. The Royal Society of Chemistry lists its first publication date as 15 March 2004. The authors were Quan Cheng, Shimin Zhu, Jie Song, and Na Zhang; Cheng and Zhang were affiliated with the University of California, Riverside, and Zhu and Song with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Read the paper at the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Chemistry World covered the work in Ian Farrell’s 1 May 2004 article, “New sensor detects cholera toxin,” identifying Cheng as the development lead. Farrell quoted Cheng saying: “There is a growing need for new analytical techniques capable of fast, sensitive and reliable detection of pathogenic agents”. That is Cheng’s attributed statement, not a performance finding from the sensor study. Read the Chemistry World report.

- IMPORTANT CODE CHIP SETUP: To ensure the meter reads the correct code, always INSERT the code chip while the meter is turned OFF. Ensure the side with the code number (e.g., 602) is facing UP when inserting. Inserting the chip with the "CODE" text side facing up is incorrect and will cause an error code!
