A 2021 laboratory study integrated a lithium–air battery around a thin lithium-ion-exchanged zeolite X membrane, used as the cell’s only solid electrolyte between a lithium-metal anode and a carbon-nanotube cathode. The authors reported 149 cycles under a defined test protocol, but the result is a research advance—not evidence of a market-ready battery or a universal safety solution.
How does a lithium–air battery work?
During discharge, a lithium–air battery uses oxygen from air at its cathode. That access to oxygen helps motivate the chemistry’s theoretical energy promise, but it also exposes the cathode side of the cell to reactions involving air. A practical design must manage the behavior of the anode, electrolyte, and air-facing cathode together.
The 2021 paper describes why that is difficult: conventional solid electrolytes can be unstable against lithium metal, air, or both, while creating interfaces with low resistance is challenging. The team’s design targets those material and integration problems.
What was unusual about the integrated design?
Xiwen Chi and colleagues reported an integrated solid-state cell in Nature, published on 21 April 2021. Its central component is an ultrathin, high-ion-conductive lithium-ion-exchanged zeolite X membrane, called LiX, which serves as the sole solid electrolyte. Cast lithium forms the anode, and carbon nanotubes form the cathode. The components were brought together using an in-situ assembly strategy.

In the authors’ words: “Here we present an integrated solid-state Li–air battery that contains an ultrathin, high-ion-conductive lithium-ion-exchanged zeolite X (LiX) membrane as the sole solid electrolyte.” The significance is the proposed combination of materials and their integration in one cell—not proof that the underlying stability and interface challenges have been solved for lithium–air batteries generally.
What performance did the study report?
The authors reported a capacity of 12,020 mAh per gram of carbon nanotubes. This figure is normalized to cathode carbon-nanotube mass; it is not a complete-cell energy capacity and cannot by itself establish vehicle range, cell-level energy density, or consumer runtime.

For cycling, the authors reported 149 cycles at a current of 500 mA per gram and a capacity limit of 1,000 mAh per gram. Under the same stated cycling conditions, their comparison cells reached 12 cycles for lithium aluminium germanium phosphate and 102 cycles for organic-electrolyte batteries, according to the study’s reported results. Those counts are meaningful as protocol-specific laboratory comparisons, not as a general ranking of battery technologies.

What limited the cell, and what does that mean for safety?
Chemistry World reported that lithium carbonate formed in a side reaction when lithium reacted with carbon dioxide; the carbonate began to inactivate the cathode after nearly 150 cycles. The report describes this as a known challenge for lithium–air batteries. It illustrates that the design’s reported cycling did not remove the need to address reactions involving air.

The study’s solid-state architecture addresses concerns about liquid systems and aims to improve material compatibility and interfaces. It does not establish that the prototype is simply safe, eliminate every failure mode, or demonstrate safety across operating conditions. Shirley Meng of the University of California, San Diego, commenting on the reporting of the results, said: “In terms of battery performances, it is not possible for me to evaluate the progress because the reporting does not follow our common practice in the field.” That is her assessment of how the performance was reported, not a retraction of the experiment.

The paper appeared in Nature, volume 592, pages 551–557 (2021), with authors affiliated with Jilin University. The publisher says study data are available from the corresponding authors upon reasonable request and that source data are supplied alongside the paper. More broadly, evaluating lithium–air results requires comparing electrolyte chemistry and thickness, lithium and air stability, cathode design and carbon-dioxide management, and cycling conditions. Capacity figures also need their normalization basis: cathode mass and complete-cell capacity are not interchangeable.
