Yes, potentially—but lower membrane fabrication cost is not proof of a cheaper industrial separation process. Research on ceramic membranes, a major class of inorganic membranes, explores inexpensive minerals and industrial by-products as feedstocks and ways to reduce energy-intensive manufacturing. Published estimates show that cheaper fabrication has been investigated; whether a plant saves money depends on separation performance, operating conditions, fouling, service life, and the full cost of equipment and operation.
What counts as an inorganic membrane?
A membrane is a selective barrier that lets some species pass while restricting others under a driving force such as pressure, concentration, or electrical potential. Inorganic membranes include ceramic materials such as alumina, zirconia, titania, silicon carbide and glass, as well as mineral-based compositions. A typical ceramic membrane has a porous support and a selective layer, sometimes separated by an intermediate layer. Much of the cost evidence available concerns ceramic membranes, particularly for water and wastewater treatment—not every inorganic membrane or industrial separation. Issaoui and Limousy’s 2019 review and a 2019 perspective on inorganic membranes describe the broader material and process challenges.
What do the published cost estimates actually show?
A 2019 review reports several fabrication estimates. They differ in date, membrane design, and what is included, so they are not a like-for-like product-price comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
| Reported estimate | What the estimate covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| About $130/m² | Approximate fabrication cost for a ceramic membrane made with kaolin and other lower-cost materials, as reported by Issaoui and Limousy in 2019. | A published estimate for fabrication, not a current supplier quotation or total plant cost. |
| $220/m² | Estimate reported by Issaoui and Limousy in 2019 for a low-cost membrane made from inorganic precursors, including kaolin, quartz, feldspar, sodium carbonate, boric acid and sodium metasilicate, for oily-wastewater treatment. | Specific to the composition and application described; not directly comparable with every other design. |
| $25.5/m² | Fabrication estimate, including pressing and sintering, for one flat support made from natural clay, kaolin and binding materials, reported in the 2019 review. | This is a support estimate, not the price of a finished selective membrane or module. |
| $500–$1,000/m² | Historical estimate for a commercial α-alumina porous tubular membrane, attributed to Céramiques Techniques (2007) and cited by Issaoui and Limousy in 2019. | A dated estimate, not a current market price or quotation. |
These figures show that researchers have investigated lower fabrication costs; they do not establish current prices or savings in total separation costs. In particular, a support cannot be compared as if it were a finished membrane, and a fabrication estimate does not include the whole plant’s equipment, energy, labor, cleaning, or replacement costs. A 2022 review of ceramic membranes for water treatment also identifies cost reduction and efficiency improvement at larger scales as unresolved engineering challenges.

How might manufacturers reduce fabrication costs?
Use less expensive feedstocks
Studies investigate natural clay, kaolin, other mineral resources, and industrial by-products such as fly ash. This can reduce raw-material expense, but the economic case depends on local availability and whether the resulting membrane meets the required performance and safety needs. Reviews cover membranes made from minerals and industrial wastes, including a 2020 review of cost-effective natural minerals and industrial wastes and a 2025 review of ceramic membrane fabrication and applications.
Use less energy in fabrication
Ceramic membrane production commonly involves heating or sintering. A 2021 review of low-energy ceramic membrane fabrication identifies sintering energy as a major production-cost component and surveys approaches such as lowering sintering temperatures, using faster or alternative sintering methods, and optimizing membrane structure. Any energy reduction still has to yield a membrane with the needed properties.

Optimize membrane design for its duty
Pore structure, permeability and rejection have to match the separation task. A change that lowers material use or processing costs can also affect selectivity, throughput, strength, or service life. The relevant comparison is therefore not simply the cost to make a membrane, but whether the less expensive design delivers the required separation under the plant’s actual operating conditions.

Reviews describe work in industrial wastewater treatment, oil–water separation, textile effluent, food and beverage processing, and selected gas separations. Examples include a fly-ash membrane studied for dye-containing textile wash water, low-cost ceramic compositions for oily wastewater, and ceramic membranes for food and beverage clarification. The 2022 water-treatment review also covers challenging settings such as saline water, oil–water separation, and wastewater containing refractory or emerging contaminants. These examples establish research activity, not routine commercial deployment for every feed or plant. See the application discussions in the 2019 review and the 2022 water-treatment review.

What can prevent a lower-cost membrane from saving money?
- Performance: The membrane must achieve the required selectivity or rejection and permeance or flux. A low fabrication cost is of little value if throughput is inadequate or the separation target is missed.
- Strength and consistency: Ceramic membranes can be brittle, and controlling pore size and selective-layer quality while scaling production can be difficult.
- Fouling and cleaning: Fouling, chemical tolerance, cleaning needs, and the feed’s variability affect operating effort and replacement frequency.
- Operating demands: Pressure, temperature, pretreatment, and the characteristics of the actual feed affect energy use and performance.
- Module and system economics: Packing density, equipment and installation, labor, waste handling, and membrane lifetime all contribute to the cost of separation.
- Scale-up and stability: Reliable modules and selective layers must be produced at scale and remain stable in service. A 2019 perspective by Y. S. Lin identifies commercialization as a continuing challenge, with permeance, stability, low-cost high-packing-density supports, and scalable selective-layer synthesis among the priorities.
How should a plant assess a claimed saving?
Compare candidate technologies for the same feed and separation goal, using the same operating assumptions. A fabrication-cost figure alone is not a lifecycle comparison. Before treating a proposed membrane as a cost-saving option, establish:
- the required selectivity or rejection, permeance or flux, and throughput;
- operating pressure and temperature, pretreatment needs, and expected feed variability;
- fouling behavior, chemical tolerance, cleaning requirements, and replacement frequency;
- service life and module packing density; and
- equipment and installation costs, energy, labor, waste handling, and lifecycle operating costs.
The reviewed sources discuss many of these factors, but do not provide a standardized cross-industry techno-economic benchmark. Any cost comparison therefore needs to state the application and assumptions rather than imply a universal saving.
