Researchers have shown that a molecular iron catalyst can help turn carbon dioxide into methane using visible light—but not with sunlight alone. The laboratory systems also needed a light-absorbing sensitizer, a sacrificial electron donor and carefully controlled solution chemistry. In the 2017 study, direct CO2 reduction mainly produced carbon monoxide; methane came from a separate, second step that reduced the CO.
What the iron-catalyst experiment did
The catalyst was an iron tetraphenylporphyrin complex modified with trimethylammonio groups, not ordinary iron metal. Researchers combined it with a photosensitizer that absorbs light and helps supply the energy for the reaction, plus a sacrificial electron donor that provides electrons. The 2017 setup used visible light in acetonitrile solution at ambient temperature and pressure, and the authors reported stable operation over several days. Nature (2017)
Turning CO2 into methane is chemically demanding: it requires multiple electron-transfer steps. Light energizes the system, while the catalyst helps guide chemical conversions. The donor is consumed in the process, so the reaction is not powered by light alone.
Why the 2017 methane result was a two-step process
In the 2017 work, the direct photoreduction of CO2 produced mainly carbon monoxide (CO). To make methane, the researchers used a two-pot sequence: first they reduced CO2 to CO, then they used a second reaction to reduce that CO to methane. For this staged route, they reported methane selectivity of up to 82% and a quantum yield of 0.18%. Those figures describe the CO-to-methane sequence, not direct, one-pot conversion of CO2 into methane. Nature (2017)

Quantum yield is a measure tied to the light-driven reaction—in this paper, the authors describe it as light-to-product efficiency. It is not, by itself, a commercial solar-to-fuel efficiency: it does not establish the performance of an outdoor solar installation or a complete industrial process.
What changed in the 2018 follow-up
In 2018, Rao and colleagues paired the iron catalyst, called Fe-p-TMA, with an organic phenoxazine sensitizer called Phen2. The system used visible light above 435 nm and a tertiary-amine sacrificial donor. With CO2 as the feedstock, the authors reported methane turnover number (TON) 29 and CO TON 140 after 102 hours; methane selectivity was 15%. TON counts product molecules relative to catalyst molecules, so it is a measure of catalyst activity over the reported run rather than a percentage of feedstock converted. JACS (2018)

- The Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Model Set from Mega Molecules offers an engaging, hands-on approach to understanding the fundamental processes of energy flow and matter cycling in living organisms.
- In this activity, users begin by building models of water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) molecules. These molecules are then assembled into glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and oxygen (O₂) within a large chloroplast model, effectively simulating the process of photosynthesis. Subsequently, the glucose and oxygen molecules are transported to a mitochondrion model, where users reassemble them into carbon dioxide and water molecules, demonstrating cellular respiration and the generation of ATP.
- This model set not only aids in visualizing the chemical transformations involved in photosynthesis and cellular respiration but also reinforces the interconnectedness of these processes. By actively engaging in the construction and deconstruction of molecular models, users gain a deeper understanding of the cyclical nature of energy conversion in biological systems.
- Ideal for middle and high school biology classes, the Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Model Set serves as an effective educational tool to enhance comprehension of these critical life processes.
The same paper reported higher methane figures under a different starting condition: when the solution was saturated with CO and optimized with 0.1 M trifluoroethanol (TFE), it reached methane TON 80, 85% selectivity and quantum yield 0.47% after 102 hours. Because this experiment started with CO rather than CO2, it demonstrates CO reduction—not the best performance for direct CO2-to-methane conversion. JACS (2018)

| Feature | 2017 Nature study | 2018 JACS follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Iron catalyst | Trimethylammonio-functionalized iron tetraphenylporphyrin | Fe-p-TMA |
| Light absorber | Photosensitizer; the paper reports an iridium complex | Organic phenoxazine sensitizer Phen2 |
| Feedstock and route | Direct CO2 photoreduction mainly made CO; methane was produced by a separate CO-reduction step | CO2-fed methane production was reported; the higher methane figures came from a separate CO-fed experiment |
| Reported conditions | Visible light, acetonitrile, ambient temperature and pressure; the staged methane route used two pots | Visible light above 435 nm, tertiary-amine donor; the CO-fed high-figure result used 0.1 M TFE |
| Methane result | Up to 82% selectivity and 0.18% quantum yield for the staged CO2-then-CO procedure | CO2-fed: selectivity 15%, TON 29, alongside CO TON 140 after 102 hours. CO-fed with 0.1 M TFE: selectivity 85%, TON 80 and quantum yield 0.47% after 102 hours |
The percentages are not an apples-to-apples ranking: the studies differ in sensitizer and procedure, and the 2018 paper’s strongest methane result used CO feedstock. The papers also report different performance measures, so a single headline percentage cannot describe the full system.

Why the recipe depends on more than the catalyst
The 2018 authors found that methane production stopped when they omitted any one of several key components: the iron catalyst, organic sensitizer, sacrificial donor, CO2 or light. They also found that acid type and concentration affected the balance between methane and hydrogen. That sensitivity matters because a catalyst’s name alone does not tell you what a working reaction requires. JACS (2018)

Not in the practical sense of pointing sunlight at an iron material and collecting methane. These were laboratory photochemical reactions using dissolved molecular components, a sacrificial donor, solvent and controlled conditions. The studies establish a chemical proof of concept, not an outdoor solar unit, consumer device or commercial-scale methane process. The cited papers do not establish lifecycle performance or a ready-to-use system.

- The DIY CO2 Kit provides an excellent method of deploying the citric acid / baking soda solution to generate CO2 for plants' growing in the aquarium. Easy to operate and designed for low cost planted tank use.
- Highlight: Much easier and safer to control. A quick reaction test tube simplifies the procedure and achieves a fast reaction. The unique design of acid absorbing ball makes it more convenient to control acid consumption. Besides, there is a simple pressure relief valve under the pressure gauge.
- Durable: Our tubing is highly resistant to pressure, and the tubing between the two caps is even acid- and hydrolysis-resistant. ABS engineering plastic caps with professional stable structural design ensure that they are non-deformable, anti-wear and anti-aging.
- Our CO2 Generator Kit includes most accessories. You only need to prepare yourself: 2 additional carbonated beverage bottles (preferably for 2L), e.g. Coke or Sprite; reaction materials: baking soda and citric acid; check valve and CO2 diffuser.
- Tips: 1. The needle valve is only used to adjust the output volume, It only need to be adjusted once. Daily switching can be controlled by the white on/off valve. The reason for this is to ensures the gas output is stable. 2. DO NOT use bottles other than carbonated beverage bottles.
A separate 2020 report explored a binary copper–iron photoelectrocatalyst, a different architecture based on a photoelectrode. It is a related research direction, not a replication of the molecular iron-porphyrin solution chemistry described above. PNAS (2020)
