A 2026 study reports that a humanized, cone-snail-inspired insulin analog called HALQ, combined with an inulin-based stabilizer, showed no aggregation over 96 hours under stress-aging conditions. That is a promising formulation result—not proof of a room-temperature shelf life, approved storage instructions, or a treatment available to patients.
What the cone snails contributed
Fish-hunting cone snails use specialized insulin in their venom as part of a prey-capture strategy. In 2015, researchers reported venom insulins in Conus geographus and Conus tulipa. The molecules resemble fish insulin more closely than the snails’ own insulin, and injection into fish caused dangerously low blood glucose. The researchers proposed that this effect helps make prey less able to escape. The discovery was reported in PNAS in 2015.
The finding mattered to insulin researchers for a different reason: some cone-snail venom insulins activate vertebrate insulin receptors, including the human receptor, despite lacking a portion of the insulin B chain that contributes to receptor interaction and self-association in human insulin. This unusual structure offered a design clue for making active insulin molecules that remain monomeric. It did not make venom insulin itself a treatment. A 2019 study examined cone-snail venom insulins as ligands of vertebrate insulin receptors.

Researchers used the structural clue to design humanized molecules rather than simply proposing venom as medicine. A 2020 study described mini-Ins, a minimized, monomeric human insulin analog. The authors reported receptor affinity similar to human insulin, similar in-vitro signaling, and similar in-vivo bioactivity. Those findings support the design concept, but are not evidence of an approved or clinically available product. The mini-Ins study appeared in 2020.

In 2022, researchers reported a fully active humanized cone-snail-inspired insulin with an elongated A chain and truncated B chain, and used structural and engineering methods to study its interactions with the insulin receptor. This work illustrates that researchers can alter insulin’s structure while seeking to preserve receptor activation. The 2022 study describes the humanized molecule and receptor work.
What the HALQ stability result does—and does not—show
The 2026 result concerns HALQ, a monomeric humanized analog, formulated with BN-Inu, an inulin-based stabilizing excipient. The authors report no aggregation over 96 hours under stress-aging conditions and describe the formulation as not requiring cold storage. The HALQ formulation result is reported here.

That finding is specifically about aggregation in a defined laboratory stress-aging window. It is not interchangeable with a validated shelf life for a finished medicine. The accessible report details cited here do not establish the exact temperature and full protocol needed to interpret the stress test operationally, nor do they establish an expiration period, patient-use instructions, or performance across real-world shipping and storage. “No aggregation over 96 hours” should therefore not be read as a general claim that insulin can safely be kept unrefrigerated.
- Molecular thermal stability concerns how a molecule withstands heat.
- Formulation aggregation resistance concerns whether molecules clump under particular test conditions; this is the endpoint reported for HALQ and BN-Inu.
- Finished-product storage stability requires validated evidence for a particular drug product, packaging, temperature range, and duration. The cited result does not establish that kind of storage guidance.
How the evidence differs across the research
| Subject | What was studied or reported | Evidence described in the cited work |
|---|---|---|
| Natural cone-snail venom insulin | Specialized insulins from fish-hunting snails and their effects on fish and insulin receptors | Ecological discovery and receptor or animal-model evidence; not a human treatment claim |
| Mini-Ins | Monomeric, minimized human insulin analog | Receptor affinity, in-vitro signaling, and in-vivo bioactivity reported as similar to human insulin in the 2020 study |
| Humanized venom-insulin analog | Analog with an elongated A chain and truncated B chain | Reported as fully active; receptor interactions studied structurally and through engineering in 2022 |
| HALQ with BN-Inu | Monomeric humanized analog with an inulin-based stabilizer | No aggregation reported over 96 hours under stress-aging conditions in the 2026 formulation result; this is not a validated product shelf life |
Is this insulin available or ready to use?
The cited studies describe biochemical, structural, animal-model, and formulation research. They do not establish human trial outcomes, regulatory approval, or commercial availability for HALQ with BN-Inu. The evidence presented also does not provide approved storage directions for it. People who use insulin should follow the storage instructions for their own prescribed product and should not change its handling based on this experimental result.
