Sunlight can chemically transform plastic into dissolved organic material in water—not just break it into smaller pieces. In a 2021 study of polyethylene, researchers detected roughly 5,000 to 15,000 molecular formulas in products from different tested samples. Those are formula counts, not a complete list of identified molecules, and they do not establish the mixture’s toxicity.
What the “tens of thousands” figure actually counts
The headline refers to molecular formulas detected with ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. A molecular formula describes the types and numbers of atoms in a molecule, but it does not necessarily reveal the molecule’s exact structure or identity. A formula count is therefore not the same as identifying and characterizing tens of thousands of specific compounds.
Nor does the count say how much of each product formed, how long it persists, or whether it harms organisms. Those questions require evidence beyond detecting formulas.
What the polyethylene study found
A 2021 study tested four single-use polyethylene bags from major retailers and a sample of pure polyethylene film. The bags differed in formulation and contained inorganic additives. Under the study’s experimental conditions, sunlight increased dissolved organic carbon production compared with dark conditions, and the amount and range of products varied among samples.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution summarized the detected formula counts as approximately 5,000 for the tested Target bag, 15,000 for the tested Walmart bag, and 9,000 for pure polyethylene film. These figures describe those particular samples and the study’s methods; they are not counts that can be applied to every plastic bag or plastic item. Across the tested polyethylene samples, sunlight increased dissolved organic carbon relative to dark leaching by 3- to 80-fold, according to the study published in Environmental Science & Technology.
The researchers described the products as water-soluble and observed their production over weeks. The results show that both plastic formulation and light exposure matter; they do not establish a single outcome for all polyethylene.

Sunlight can change plastic chemically as well as physically
Plastic weathering is often described as fragmentation: larger items break into smaller pieces. The polyethylene study also found products in polymer, dissolved, and gas phases, showing that chemical transformation and dissolution are part of the picture.

Results vary by polymer, exposure, and experimental conditions
In a 2023 seawater study, tested microplastics made from polyethylene, polypropylene, and expanded polystyrene produced 319–705 light-associated photoproduct formulas, compared with 0–12 in dark conditions. The detected products included oxygen-containing formulas, and their characteristics differed with polymer composition. These results support the conclusion that several tested plastics can produce chemically diverse dissolved material under light, not that every plastic releases the same products.
A 2025 study followed five plastics during a 1,000-day outdoor natural-sunlight experiment. Its abstract reports that polymer composition and exposure duration affected plastic-derived dissolved organic matter, describing short-term dissolution and longer-term oxidation and molecular recombination. Those findings help show why duration and material type matter; they are not a universal forecast for every plastic in the environment.

- OUR AIR FORMALDEHYDE (HCHO) DIY TEST KIT: for rapid detection of formaldehyde levels in the air, is an interference-resistant, high-purity, stable reagent for use in a variety of indoor environments up to 270 feet, over which multiple kits are recommended. To test an entire house, at least one kit per room is required
- HOW FAST ACCURATE RESULTS ARE OBTAINED: Formaldehyde test kits are for single use only. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions in the supplied manual. Make sure the air temperature and humidity are constant and the test area is sealed. In just 30-50 minutes, you'll get visual results showing formaldehyde levels
- BEFORE YOU START THE TEST: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that indoor formaldehyde levels should not exceed 0.10 mg/m. Before testing, seal the room for at least 1 hour and turn off any ventilation, air purifiers or equipment that may affect the air for 1-3 hours. This will ensure reliable results from the formaldehyde test kit
- IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: To ensure your respiratory health, test results should show formaldehyde levels below the recommended threshold. If the solution comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with water. Store unused test kits in a dry, light-proof place away from children and do not freeze
- FULL CUSTOMER SUPPORT: If formaldehyde levels are low, results may be difficult to interpret. If you need help, please contact our friendly customer support team. If you detect excessive levels of formaldehyde, ask us to provide you with a free formaldehyde removal method to help improve the air quality around you
Comparisons between experiments depend on what was tested and measured: polymer and formulation, light or dark exposure, duration, water conditions, and whether the outcome was dissolved organic carbon, detected formulas, or particle fragmentation. Analytical methods and the level of molecular identification also affect what a formula count means.

Formula counts alone cannot determine whether the resulting mixture is toxic or what effects it may have on aquatic ecosystems. The cited chemical studies do not provide a comprehensive toxicity assessment of the full mixture. Their findings establish a chemical transformation pathway under specified conditions, not the overall environmental risk from every plastic item.

Why researchers called the result astonishing
WHOI attributed this reaction to study co-author Collin Ward, an assistant scientist in its Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department: “It’s astonishing to think that sunlight can break down plastic, which is essentially one compound that typically has some additives mixed in, into tens of thousands of compounds that dissolve in water.” The phrase captures the breadth of detected formulas; read it alongside the distinction between formula detection and full molecular identification.
