Dicofol is known as a miticide used in its own right, but it can also form as DDT transforms in the environment. A 2018 study of soils in Northwest Fujian, China, found that this overlooked pathway mattered when interpreting pesticide residues: the presence of dicofol alone does not prove that dicofol was applied, or that DDT was recently used.

What is the overlooked form of DDT?

It is dicofol, a pesticide commonly recognized as a miticide. The authors of a 2018 Environmental Pollution study described it as “not only a miticide originated from commercial use, but also a metabolite of” DDT. In other words, dicofol found in soil can have more than one possible source: direct application or formation from DDT.

The distinction matters for residue analysis. Detecting dicofol does not, by itself, identify which source produced it. Investigators need chemical evidence and context to distinguish the possibilities.

What did the Northwest Fujian study find?

The study examined soils from Northwest Fujian, China, and used isomer ratios and mass balance to assess the origin of measured p,p′-(dicofol + DBP). Its evidence indicated that these compounds predominantly came from the transformation of p,p′-DDT rather than from actual dicofol application in the soils studied.

45.0% — the study authors, 2018: p,p′-(dicofol + DBP) represented this share of primary DDT metabolites in the sampled Northwest Fujian soils. This is a result from that regional study, not a universal estimate of how much DDT becomes dicofol or related compounds.

The study establishes that the pathway can be important in a particular setting. It does not show that dicofol is a major DDT transformation product everywhere, or that every environmental detection of dicofol came from DDT.

How does this pathway fit with DDE and DDD?

DDE and DDD remain important DDT transformation products. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency technical material describes DDE as favored in aerobic systems and DDD as a major metabolite under anaerobic conditions. The Northwest Fujian study reports an additional route from DDT to dicofol and DBP, alongside pathways that pass through DDE or DDD.

Pathway or source What the evidence says
DDE Favored in aerobic systems, according to EPA technical material.
DDD A major DDT metabolite in anaerobic conditions, according to EPA technical material.
Dicofol and DBP The 2018 Northwest Fujian study supports formation from DDT in the soils it examined; commercial dicofol use is another possible source.

Does finding dicofol mean DDT was recently applied?

No. Dicofol alone cannot establish recent DDT use because it may result either from commercial dicofol application or from DDT transformation. In the Northwest Fujian study, the authors used isomer ratios and mass balance to favor DDT transformation as the source of the measured p,p′ compounds.

The study also warns that leaving p,p′-(dicofol + DBP) out of the analysis can lead to large overestimates of fresh DDT input when investigators use the traditional DDD/DDE-to-DDT ratio. That finding concerns the study’s soils and analytical interpretation; it does not establish that the same bias occurs in every location.

Why do DDT residues still matter?

DDT can remain in the environment long after use ends. The EPA says it is very persistent, can accumulate in fatty tissues, and can travel long distances through the atmosphere. Historical use therefore remains relevant to residue investigations.

Multi-Residue Pesticides Food Test by SimpleLab
  • At-home lab food safety test: SimpleLab's multi-residue pesticide food safety kit tests for 587 potential contaminants from chemical residues. This test is intended for 1 single food sample.
  • Contaminants tested: Multi-residue pesticide testing for food safety. Ideal for those concerned about agricultural chemicals on produce or foods from unknown or highly treated sources.
  • What are multi-residue pesticides: Multi-residue pesticides refer to a broad range of chemical treatments used in agriculture to protect crops. These residues can persist on food surfaces, even after washing, and may pose health risks over time.
  • When to test: Essential for testing produce from high-pesticide crops, food sourced from areas with intensive farming, or items with unknown growing practices.
  • Everything you need to test: This mail-to-lab test kit includes all sampling materials, prepaid return shipping, lab testing, and digital report-back.

The EPA also summarizes evidence linking DDE to eggshell thinning and reproductive effects in birds. These environmental effects help explain why researchers continue to examine DDT and its transformation products.

What is DDT’s regulatory status?

The EPA says DDT registration was cancelled in the United States in 1972. Internationally, the Stockholm Convention restricts DDT, with a limited exemption for malaria vector control; individual countries decide whether to use it for that purpose. These summaries do not replace current, country-specific rules.
