Borgs are unusually large DNA elements found alongside methane-oxidizing Methanoperedens archaea. Their genomes contain genes linked to methane metabolism and energy conservation, so they may influence what their hosts can do. But researchers have not shown that Borgs make microbes consume methane faster or affect climate.
What are Borgs?
Borgs are extrachromosomal elements: DNA sequences separate from an organism’s main chromosome. In a 2022 Nature study, Basem Al-Shayeb and colleagues reconstructed four complete Borg genomes from metagenomic samples of wetland soil, groundwater and sediments. The genomes are linear and approximately 662–918 kilobases long, making them unusually large for extrachromosomal DNA elements.
The researchers identified at least 19 Borg types coexisting with methane-oxidizing Methanoperedens in four distinct ecosystems. Borg genomes have distinctive organization, including long inverted terminal repeats and tandem repeats. They also contain many genes with unknown functions, as well as genes associated with redox reactions and energy conservation.

Why are they called Borgs?
The name refers to the fictional Star Trek collective, whose members assimilate others. Berkeley Lab’s account says the researchers chose it because the elements appeared to have genes from multiple organisms. That is an inference from genomic evidence—including gene similarities, evolutionary relationships and local sequence patterns—not a direct observation of genes moving between organisms.

How might Borgs relate to methane metabolism?
Methanoperedens are archaea that oxidize methane without oxygen. They can couple that process to the reduction of iron, nitrate or manganese. Borg genomes include genes associated with this kind of metabolism, including methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR), an enzyme central to methane metabolism, and multihaem cytochromes, which are associated with redox processes.
These genes make it plausible that Borgs could contribute to or expand aspects of their hosts’ metabolic capacity. However, finding a gene in a reconstructed genome does not establish that it is active, what it does in its host, or whether it changes the host’s methane-oxidation rate.

What the discovery has—and has not—shown
The 2022 study established genomic features and an association with Methanoperedens; it did not measure a change in methane oxidation caused by Borgs. The authors said further work was needed to establish functional relevance and proposed comparing host cultures with and without Borgs under different geochemical conditions.
The elements’ precise biological classification was also unresolved. The authors wrote, “We can neither prove that they are archaeal viruses or plasmids or minichromosomes, nor prove that they are not.” In other words, the study described their genomes and associations without settling what kind of genetic element Borgs are.

What did the 2024 study add?
A 2024 Nature Microbiology study by Ling-Dong Shi and colleagues examined a wider range of extrachromosomal elements associated with Methanoperedens, rather than focusing only on giant Borgs. It reported mini-Borgs of 52–145 kilobases, eight families of Methanoperedens viruses, and circular or unclassified elements. Some of the viruses also encode multihaem cytochromes.
The researchers reported genetic exchange among these elements and with Methanoperedens, and suggested that such exchange could affect host activity and evolution. These genomic findings broaden the picture of genetic elements associated with the archaea; they do not demonstrate a resulting change in methane emissions or climate.

Could Borgs affect climate change?
There is a possible connection worth investigating: methane is a greenhouse gas, and the hosts associated with Borgs oxidize methane. If Borgs alter host metabolism in nature, they could potentially matter to the methane cycle. But the evidence described in the 2022 and 2024 studies does not establish that Borgs increase methane oxidation, reduce atmospheric methane, or produce a measurable climate effect.

For now, Borgs are best understood as giant, genetically distinctive elements with a potentially important relationship to methane-metabolizing archaea—not as a proven climate intervention or methane-consuming upgrade.
