Small hive beetles (Aethina tumida) can exploit chemical cues that honey bees use in alarm signaling. In controlled experiments published in 2007, the beetles detected the bee alarm pheromone isopentyl acetate (IPA), and the researchers found that yeast carried by beetles could produce attractive odors on bee-collected pollen. The work offers a mechanism for how beetles may locate and gather at colonies; it does not show that they cause colony collapse disorder or quantify current field risk.

How can a bee alarm signal help a beetle?

Honey bees release alarm pheromones as part of their defensive communication. The 2007 study by Baldwyn Torto and colleagues found that IPA, one of those chemicals, can also attract small hive beetles. The beetles do not understand a warning in a human sense: they detect a chemical cue that can reveal where bees or a colony are.

The researchers combined chemical analysis, antennal-response tests and controlled wind-tunnel assays. Those experiments support the individual links in a proposed sequence, but they are not a direct measurement of how often beetles locate hives in the field.

What the experiments measured

  • In tests of hive-entrance odors, beetle antennae detected an IPA level equivalent to 2 ng; guard and forager bee antennae did not detect that tested level.
  • IPA alone attracted beetles in a flight-tunnel assay. At the highest tested release rate, 120 ng/hour, 32% of males and 40% of females showed their maximum upwind response. Those percentages describe responses in that laboratory setup, not the share of beetles that will find a hive outdoors.
  • The paper estimated that 100 artificially stressed European honey bees released 50–120 ng/hour of IPA, compared with 0.8–6 ng/hour at the entrance of an undisturbed colony. The authors characterized the stressed-bee amount as approximately 1,500–10,000 times greater; the comparison is specific to those estimates and conditions.

How could yeast and pollen recruit more beetles?

The paper also describes a beetle–yeast–pollen interaction. Beetles collected in the United States and Africa carried a strain identified as Kodamaea ohmeri. In experiments, the yeast grown on bee-collected pollen produced IPA and other volatile compounds, and the yeast-inoculated pollen attracted beetles in wind-tunnel tests.

From these results, the authors proposed a two-stage process: beetles may use colony odors, including IPA, to find a hive; after entering, beetles can introduce yeast to pollen, where fermentation produces odors that may attract additional beetles. The study demonstrated yeast-associated odor production and attraction under controlled conditions. It did not establish how frequently this sequence occurs in managed colonies or how much it contributes to infestation in the field.

What role do bee defenses and stress play?

The study discusses differences in how African and European honey bees respond to small hive beetles, including behaviors such as removing beetle eggs and imprisoning invaders. It presents European colonies as more vulnerable under some conditions, while also considering colony stress and management factors. These are population- and context-specific observations and interpretations from the paper, not a rule that every African colony resists beetles or every European colony is susceptible.

The contrast between an undisturbed colony and artificially stressed bees matters because stress can change the amount of alarm odor available to beetles. The study’s measured emissions show that difference in its experimental comparison; they do not provide a current risk estimate for a particular apiary.

Do small hive beetles cause colony collapse disorder?

The 2007 report does not identify small hive beetles as the cause of colony collapse disorder (CCD). It explicitly cautions against treating beetle susceptibility as an explanation for CCD. Bee ecologist Bernard Vaissiere, quoted in the report, said: “I do not think that there is a link between the greater susceptibility of the European honeybee to the small hive beetle and colony collapse disorder.” That statement and the report belong to the CCD discussion as it stood in 2007; they do not establish the cause of any particular colony loss.

The Chemistry World article mentioned losses of up to 70% in some North American regions during the then-reported CCD episode. That is a historical figure, not a current loss estimate, and the report did not attribute those losses to small hive beetles.

What the study does—and does not—tell beekeepers

The findings explain a plausible chemical route by which small hive beetles can exploit bee signals, but they are not a field survey, a current assessment of beetle distribution, or a comparison of commercial hive traps. The traps used in the paper were part of controlled odor-attraction experiments; the study does not establish which retail trap works best or recommend a product. For local pest identification and management, use current guidance from your regional beekeeping or agricultural authority.
