Researchers demonstrated a treated wood material that can shed heat passively, without electricity or water at the material itself. It is not an air conditioner: the reported result was a cooler surface in a specific outdoor test, while potential building-energy savings came from modeling—not from widespread real-world installations.

What “super-wood” means in this story

The term refers to radiative-cooling wood demonstrated by researchers in 2019, not to a powered cooling system or a proven replacement for home HVAC. The material is designed to reject heat into the sky. It does not refrigerate air, circulate it through rooms, or independently control a building’s temperature.

It is also distinct from InventWood’s product branded SUPERWOOD. The company describes that product as structural wood for interior and exterior building applications; its pages do not identify it as the radiative-cooling material described here. See InventWood’s contact and SUPERWOOD FAQ and its applications description.

How the cooling wood works

The University of Maryland’s account says the researchers removed lignin from wood, compressed the treated material, and added a superhydrophobic compound to make it water repellent. Processing changes the wood’s optical and thermal behavior: it reflects sunlight while emitting heat through a region of the atmosphere that allows thermal energy to escape toward the cold sky. This is passive radiative cooling, not the production of chilled air.

As co-first author Yao Zhai put it in the University of Maryland release, “When applied to building, this game-changing structural material cools without the input of electricity or water.” That describes the material’s cooling mechanism, not a demonstrated whole-building system that eliminates HVAC.

What the field test found—and what it did not

In a University of Maryland-reported test on a farm in Arizona, under warm, sunny, low-wind conditions, the material averaged 5–6°F below ambient air temperature during the hottest part of the day. In the reported comparison, it averaged about 12°F cooler than natural wood, which warmed more in sunlight. These are results from that test setting, not guaranteed temperatures for other climates, installations, or buildings.

FONUNO Bubble Insulation Sheet, Reflective Insulation Roll, 47IN X 10FT
  • Premium Material: The double-sided insulation roll is made of high-quality reflective aluminum film and polyethylene air bubble cushion, with a surface round hole design to increase reflectivity. The RV window insulation is durable and long-lasting, resistant to scratches.
  • Temperature Protection: The reflective insulation roll reduces heat transfer for year-round comfort, while the reflective bubble sheet provides energy-saving, window insulation and privacy protection.
  • Excellent Performance: The window insulation for summer has excellent waterproof performance, allowing worry-free outdoor use. It is easy to clean with a simple wipe. When not in use, it can be easily folded up for space-saving and convenient carrying.
  • Wide Usage: Our insulation sheet is versatile and can be used for various spaces, including windows, RVs, roofs, garage doors, and more as a heat blocker.
  • Easy Installation: The usage of the foil insulation roll is easy and convenient. Simply cut it to the desired size with a utility knife or scissors, then use the provided double-sided tape for easy installation.

Co-first author Tian Li described the mechanism in the same institutional release: “The processed wood uses the cold universe as heat sink and release thermal energy into it via atmospheric transparency window. It is a sustainable material for sustainable energy to combat global warming.” These quotations are reproduced by the University of Maryland; they should not be read as quotations from the journal paper itself.

What the energy-savings estimates mean

The 2019 study abstract indexed by PubMed reports modeled building-energy savings of 20–60%, with the greatest potential in hot, dry climates. Separately, the University of Maryland release reports a modeled average 20% reduction in cooling costs for U.S. buildings constructed after 2004. The figures describe model estimates under building and climate assumptions, not measured savings across occupied buildings or a prediction of an individual household’s utility bill.

Climate matters because the material’s heat rejection depends on radiative exchange with the sky, while a building’s cooling demand also depends on its design and conditions. The published estimates therefore indicate modeled potential, not one savings rate that can be applied to every location or home.

Can it replace a conventional air conditioner?

The available findings do not establish that it can. A surface that runs below outdoor air temperature is not by itself equivalent to an HVAC system that removes heat from indoor air, distributes cooling through a building, and meets changing occupant needs. The 2019 report combines a material demonstration with building-energy modeling; it does not document broad real-building installations replacing conventional systems. Nature’s 2019 feature on radiative-cooling materials said their role in displacing air conditioners remained unclear.

Nor do the cited sources establish that the radiative-cooling wood described in the University of Maryland’s 2019 account is available as a retail building product. InventWood’s current SUPERWOOD descriptions concern a separate structural product, not this radiative-cooling wood.
