If Windows 11 rearranges desktop icons when you drag one, start by checking Auto arrange icons: right-click an empty area of the desktop, open View, and turn Auto arrange off if you want to position icons manually. If that does not help, note exactly when the icons move, then check for display-setting changes or newly added desktop files. The symptom alone does not identify one confirmed cause.
First, check the desktop arrangement settings

Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select View.

If Auto arrange icons is checked, select it to turn it off. Auto Arrange controls automatic positioning; turning it off is the first check when you want to place icons yourself. Community troubleshooting recommends checking this setting, but it is not proof that it explains every rearrangement. Microsoft Q&A discussion and another Microsoft Q&A discussion contain individual reports and suggestions, not a universal diagnosis.

Treat Align icons to grid as a separate preference. When enabled, icons snap into aligned positions; when disabled, placement can be less constrained. Choose based on whether you prefer tidy spacing or freer placement. You do not need to turn off both settings just because an icon moves unexpectedly.

Microsoft’s desktop customization guide covers shortcuts, icon size, showing or hiding desktop icons, and theme-controlled common icons such as This PC and Recycle Bin. It is not a dedicated guide to icon positions being reset.
Pin down when the rearrangement occurs
Watch whether the icons move during the drag, immediately after you release the mouse, after refreshing or signing in, after connecting a monitor, or when a desktop file is saved, copied, or renamed. That timing helps separate an arrangement-setting issue from something that coincides with a display change or a new desktop item.

If the same icons move after connecting or disconnecting a display, or changing display settings, check the display configuration next.

If the change coincides with a new, copied, saved, or renamed item, check which files and shortcuts are actually on the desktop.

If neither pattern fits, record the trigger and configuration before trying more advanced changes; the symptom by itself is not enough to identify a cause.
These patterns are leads, not established explanations for every PC. For example, a user in a Microsoft Q&A thread dated November 8, 2024, reported icons snapping back when moved to the bottom row on one display but not on other screens. A separate thread includes 2025 reports of items shifting after files were saved, copied, or renamed. The display-specific report and the file-related reports describe individual cases, not proof of a general Windows 11 cause.

Check display settings if the timing points to a monitor change

Open Settings > System > Display.

Confirm which display is selected, then review Scale and Display resolution. Microsoft recommends the choices marked Recommended for the selected display.

If the resolution is changing unexpectedly, check Windows Update for available graphics driver updates. Microsoft identifies an unexpected resolution change as a possible sign that the graphics driver needs updating; that is a diagnostic lead, not confirmation that scaling caused your icons to move. Check desktop files and shortcuts if items appear or shift around
An icon on the desktop may represent a file or a shortcut. If new or unexpected icons appear at the same time as the rearrangement, inspect the desktop folders to see what is actually there:

Open
%UserProfile%Desktopin File Explorer to check the current user’s Desktop folder. -
If OneDrive desktop backup is enabled, also check

These checks can help identify where added items came from. A Microsoft external staff moderator recommended them in a response dated May 15, 2026, about unexpected icons; that response does not establish OneDrive as a general cause of desktop layout changes.

What to do if the icons still move
If Auto arrange is off and the timing does not point to a display change or added desktop items, collect enough detail to make the problem reproducible before changing advanced settings:

Your Windows version and build.

Your display setup, including the number of monitors and which one is selected when the problem occurs.

The exact trigger and sequence—for example, whether the icons move during the drag or only after you release the mouse.

A short description of the change, including which icons move and where they end up.
There is no documented built-in setting in the Microsoft support pages cited here that guarantees exact icon positions through every display change. Avoid treating a registry edit as a routine fix: it was suggested in a community thread, and the same discussion includes a participant who reported that it did not work. The available reports do not establish that edit as a proven, broadly validated solution.
