A single gold atom can shift how an ionized diol breaks apart: in a 2020 experiment, the detected fragments changed sharply toward C2H4+ when gold was present. The team formed the molecular complexes inside superfluid helium nanodroplets, avoiding a solid catalyst support. The result is a controlled molecular-level observation—not evidence of an industrial-ready catalyst.
How the helium nanoreactor experiment worked
Shengfu Yang, Jinlong Yang, and their coauthors studied 1,6-hexanediol and 1,8-octanediol, two molecules with hydroxyl groups at the ends of their carbon chains. They added a diol and gold atoms sequentially to cold helium nanodroplets. The droplets brought the molecules and gold together to form complexes before ionization, without contact with a solid surface. The team then used 100 eV electron impact to ionize the droplets and measured the ions ejected as the complexes dissociated.
The primary study, “Ion-molecule reactions catalyzed by a single gold atom”, appeared in Chemical Science, volume 11, pages 8502–8505. It was first published on 27 July 2020 and is open access.
“One gold atom” describes an average, not every droplet
Under the study’s controlled pickup conditions, the average was one Au atom per droplet. Pickup followed a Poisson distribution, so the droplets did not all contain exactly one atom: approximately 37% contained no Au, 37% contained one, 18% contained two, and 8% contained three or more. This matters when interpreting the mass spectra, because the detected signal came from a mixed population.

Gold shifted the detected fragments toward ethylene ions
Without Au, prominent detected ions included C2H4+, HCO+, and CH2OH+. With Au present, C2H4+ became the sole prominent product in the reported spectra for both diols.
| Diol system | C2H4+ share of overall ion signal | Calculated abundance after accounting for gold-free droplets |
|---|---|---|
| 1,6-hexanediol–Au | Approximately 66% | 95% |
| 1,8-octanediol–Au | Approximately 68% | 92% |
These percentages are mass-spectral ion abundances reported by the authors, not reaction yields from a bulk chemical process. The adjusted values account for droplets with no gold; they are not a separate bulk-yield measurement.

How the authors explain the change
Density functional theory calculations on ionized 1,6-hexanediol complexes indicated that Au weakens C–O bonds while strengthening C–C bonds. In the authors’ proposed mechanism, that relative change favors C–O cleavage. Subsequent loss of OH groups can produce C6H12+, followed by preferential formation of C2H4+.
The calculations offer a mechanistic interpretation consistent with the observed fragments; they do not by themselves establish that every reaction followed this exact sequence. The authors also caution that ionization complicates the picture: charge-transfer ionization by He+ deposits more than 10 eV of excess energy in the complex. They identify lower-energy photoionization or a solution-phase study as possible ways to investigate the mechanism further.

What the result does—and does not—show
The experiment is significant because it makes a gold–molecule interaction observable without the added complexity of a solid support surface. It demonstrates, for these diol complexes under the study’s ionization conditions, that a weakly interacting single metal atom can strongly influence which fragments dominate. That is a molecular-level example of single-atom catalysis in an ionization-induced dissociation experiment.
It does not establish a commercially deployed catalyst, a practical manufacturing process, or a general rule for other molecules, surfaces, or reaction conditions. The authors frame pre-activating selected bonds through molecular complex formation as a possible direction for rational catalyst design, rather than as a ready-to-use technology.
