Laser-based “listening” to quantum beats could give researchers a new way to investigate how birds sense Earth’s magnetic field—but it has not revealed how a bird navigates. In a 2021 experiment, researchers read spin dynamics in a synthetic molecule, not in a bird or its cryptochrome protein. Applying that technique to the proposed biological compass is a possible next step, not a result already demonstrated.
What did the experiment measure?
Mims and colleagues reported a pump-push spectroscopy experiment in Science in December 2021. They used a designed electron donor–acceptor molecule, or dyad, to create and then read out a short-lived radical pair. A radical pair consists of two molecules or molecular parts carrying unpaired electrons whose spins can influence how the pair reacts.
- Pump: A laser pulse created a charge-separated state in the dyad, forming the radical pair.
- Wait: The researchers varied the delay while the pair’s spin state evolved.
- Push and detect: A second pulse excited the radical pair and triggered rapid recombination into optically distinguishable products with singlet or triplet spin multiplicity. The products’ signals indicated the spin state when the push pulse arrived.
By changing the delay and measuring the resulting optical signal, the team tracked the pair’s changing spin state. The study described this readout as a spin quantum measurement. The experiment demonstrated a way to measure radical-pair spin dynamics in the synthetic dyad; it did not test a living bird, bird navigation, or cryptochrome protein. Science: Mims et al. (2021)
What are “quantum beats,” and what does “listening” mean?
Here, quantum beats are oscillations in the radical pair’s spin state as it evolves. “Listening” is a metaphor: the researchers did not record sound with microphones. They used timed laser pulses and optical detection to infer the spin state from the reaction products.

Chemistry World reported that the oscillations in the laboratory system lasted less than 100 nanoseconds before damping. That is a timescale for the measured molecular spin dynamics, not a measurement of how long a bird senses a magnetic field or responds to it. Chemistry World (2022)
Study co-leader Ulrich Steiner, a chemist at the University of Konstanz, described the unusual pattern: “This kind of quantum beat kinetics is rather exceptional because chemical kinetics is usually always monotonically approaching some equilibrium state.”

Why might this matter for bird migration?
The proposed connection is the radical-pair hypothesis of magnetoreception. Under this idea, light-sensitive cryptochrome proteins in a bird’s retina may form radical pairs. Their spin dynamics and resulting chemical reactions could be influenced by Earth’s magnetic field, creating a signal that contributes to magnetic sensing. The hypothesis is a leading explanation, but the sensory mechanism behind birds’ magnetic sense remains unresolved. Hore and Mouritsen, Annual Review of Biophysics (2016)
The pump-push method could help investigate this idea by giving scientists a way to track spin-state changes in a relevant protein or protein-like system. But the dyad experiment itself did not show that the magnetic field changes a bird’s compass, nor did it establish how any such signal would guide migration.

What has research on cryptochrome shown?
A separate 2021 study examined cryptochrome 4 (CRY4) from the night-migratory European robin, as well as CRY4 from chicken and pigeon. It found that photochemistry in the robin protein was magnetically sensitive in vitro and more so than the chicken and pigeon proteins. This is evidence from a laboratory-prepared protein system, not proof that CRY4 is the working magnetic receptor in a living bird. Xu et al., Nature (2021)
These are separate evidence strands: one study demonstrated a spin-state measurement technique in a synthetic dyad; another found magnetic sensitivity in isolated bird proteins. Applying pump-push spectroscopy to cryptochrome was proposed as a possible future research direction, not reported as a result of the dyad study.

How strong is the case for a single magnetic-sensing mechanism?
Cryptochrome-based radical pairs are not the only mechanism discussed for animal magnetoreception. Reviews also consider magnetite-associated pathways, and the biological sensory system remains an open question. The evidence does not justify treating one proposed mechanism as a settled, universal explanation for magnetic sensing across animals. Kavet and Brain, American Physiological Society (2021)

What could the next experiments investigate?
One potential use of pump-push measurements would be to examine whether spin-state signals in cryptochrome or a protein-like construct respond to controlled magnetic conditions. Ilya Solov’yov, who leads the quantum biology group at the University of Oldenburg, suggested exploring changes in field strength and direction: “It would be very nice to see what would happen if we start changing the intensity of magnetic fields, and maybe also try to design experiments where we try to look at similar results as a function of the direction of the magnetic field.” That is a proposed research direction, not evidence that these measurements have already decoded a bird’s compass.
