Possibly—but the available evidence does not show that the featured lateral-flow HPV test has increased screening or detection rates in resource-constrained settings. It is a research-stage prototype for HPV16 and HPV18. Separate implementation research suggests that self-collection and community-based support can help people participate in screening, but that study used a different test and found substantial variation in follow-up.

What the lateral-flow HPV test does—and what has been tested

The 2023 NATflow study describes a sample-to-answer prototype that combines isothermal DNA amplification with lateral-flow detection. The design aims to reduce reliance on complex instruments. It targets HPV16 and HPV18, not every high-risk HPV type; broader genotype coverage is described as future potential, not an established capability. The prototype study evaluated synthetic samples, provider-collected clinical samples in the United States, and self-collected clinical samples in Mozambique.

The study reported an analytical limit of detection of 1,000 HPV16 or HPV18 DNA copies per test, a six-step user workflow, and results in 45 minutes. These are prototype-study findings. They do not establish clinical sensitivity or specificity in a large screening population, routine field performance, or regulatory or commercial availability.

The authors projected a test cost below $5 and instrumentation cost below $1,000. Those figures are projections, not verified retail or procurement prices. They also do not represent the full cost of a screening program, which can include sample collection, staff, transport, quality assurance, triage, and treatment.

Why a detectable HPV result is not the same as higher detection rates

Several different outcomes matter when judging whether a screening approach works. They answer different questions and should not be used interchangeably:

  • Analytical detection: Can the assay detect target DNA under defined study conditions? The reported limit of detection addresses this for HPV16 and HPV18.
  • Clinical performance: How well does the test identify disease or infection in the intended population compared with a reference method? Prototype sample testing is not the same as large-scale prospective screening validation.
  • Screening participation: What share of eligible people complete screening? This depends on access, outreach, trust, and the collection process as well as the test.
  • Detection yield: How many HPV infections or precancer cases are found among those screened? The result depends on the population, sampling, test, and follow-up.
  • Program impact: Do people with positive results receive timely triage and treatment, and does the program improve health outcomes? A fast test alone cannot ensure those steps happen.

So, a simple workflow could help make point-of-care screening more feasible, but the prototype’s analytical result does not prove that it will raise population-level detection. That claim requires evidence from a screening program measuring participation, clinical performance, follow-up, and outcomes.

What implementation evidence from India can tell us

A 2024 pragmatic implementation study examined self-collected HPV screening in tribal, rural, and urban-slum settings in Tamil Nadu, India. Over eight months, the study reported 30.3% overall participation across the three settings. Participation, HPV positivity, and triage follow-up differed by setting:

Setting Screening participation HPV positivity Triage follow-up
Tribal 31.0% 12.1% 56.1%
Urban-slum 26.7% 3.1% 45.5%
Rural 32.9% 5.5% 84.6%

These figures, reported by Oommen et al. in PLOS ONE, describe different endpoints: participation is not positivity, and positivity is not completed triage. The study used self-sampling alongside community education, trained health workers, clinical testing capacity, triage, and treatment pathways. The test kit used at a secondary care center was careHPV, not the lateral-flow prototype.

The study authors describe adapting outreach and bringing colposcopy and treatment closer to remote tribal communities. Its results support the importance of local delivery and follow-up, but do not isolate the effect of any one element. The work covered one state in south India, had no control arm, did not involve government primary health centers in program delivery, and did not assess cost effectiveness. It therefore cannot establish that a lateral-flow test caused greater uptake or detection.

What would need to be shown before the prototype could support that claim

WHO’s target product profiles for HPV nucleic-acid tests, published on 18 November 2024, set out development targets for laboratory and point-of-care use. They are benchmarks for product development and public-health fit, not a certification that the NATflow prototype meets them. The WHO profiles provide a useful frame for evaluating what a point-of-care test would need to deliver.

A meaningful evaluation should consider more than speed or analytical detection. Relevant questions include:

  • Which HPV genotypes does the test detect, and is that coverage suitable for the screening program?
  • What are its clinical sensitivity and specificity for precancer against an appropriate reference standard in the intended population?
  • Which specimen types are supported, and can people collect samples themselves?
  • How many operator steps are required, and what training, equipment, power, or environmental conditions are needed?
  • What is the cost of the complete workflow, not just the test or instrument?
  • Can people with positive results access timely triage and treatment?

Comparisons should use clinical performance measured against comparable reference standards and populations. An analytical limit of detection alone cannot answer whether a test finds more clinically important disease in routine use.

How self-collection evidence from Papua New Guinea fits

A 2018 study in Papua New Guinea evaluated self-collected vaginal specimens using Xpert HPV and reported strong agreement with clinician-collected cervical specimens. This is adjacent evidence that self-collection can be assessed in a high-burden, lower-resource setting; it is not validation of the lateral-flow prototype, which uses a different assay and needs its own clinical evaluation. See the Papua New Guinea study.
