Charging a liquid drop can suppress the splash it would otherwise make on impact—but only under particular conditions. In a 2025 experiment, sufficiently charged drops spread without splashing on dielectric surfaces such as glass and alumina. The same suppression was not observed on the conductive surfaces tested. The key is how electric forces affect the thin liquid sheet and air film as the drop hits.

How can electric charge prevent a splash?

When a drop strikes a solid fast enough, liquid spreads outward in a thin, fast-moving sheet called an ejecting lamella. That sheet can lift away from the surface and break into droplets, producing a splash. A very thin layer of air between the liquid and the solid also influences the impact.

In their 2025 paper, “Why Charged Drops Do Not Splash,” published in Physical Review Letters, Fanfei Yu and colleagues report that electric charge can change this competition. The authors’ explanation is that electrostatic attraction pulls the ejecting lamella toward the substrate, making the lubrication air film thinner and reducing the lamella’s lift-off and breakup. The paper’s abstract describes the force and thinner air film as central to the effect.

This is a conditional result, not a rule that charged drops never splash. The outcome depends on factors including charge, impact conditions and the electrical properties of the surface.

Why does the surface material matter?

The study’s supplemental experiments found reduced splashing on dielectric surfaces—glass and corundum, or alumina—but not on the conductive surfaces tested, including ITO glass and silicon wafers. The authors attribute the difference to charge dissipating when the drop contacts a conductor. On a dielectric surface, charge remains with the drop longer during spreading, allowing the electrostatic effect to persist.

Surface category Surfaces tested Reported result
Dielectric Glass and corundum (alumina) Reduced splashing was observed.
Conductive ITO glass and silicon wafers No reduction in splashing was observed.

These results compare the specific surfaces in the experiments; they do not establish what will happen on every material within either category. The paper’s theoretical framework relates splash-threshold velocity to drop charge and substrate dielectric constant, underscoring that the threshold depends on the system rather than charge alone.

What charge and drop size did the experiment use?

An APS Physics explainer describes ethanol drops typically about 0.8 mm in diameter. In the apparatus it summarizes, an electric field generated using a syringe needle and copper ring altered the drops’ charge; the drops fell onto a horizontal surface. The explainer gives 20–60 cm as the distance from the needle to the glass impact surface.

The explainer cites 0.1 nC as an example charge at which splashing was entirely suppressed in the reported study. That is an experimental example, not a universal cutoff: a different liquid, surface or impact speed may produce a different outcome.

How does this compare with earlier work on charged drops?

A 2019 Soft Matter study examined how weakly charged droplets affect the thin gas film beneath an impacting drop. Under its representative impact conditions, it reported a critical charge of approximately 1% of the Rayleigh limit. Above that level, Maxwell stress deformed the bottom of the drop and a conical tip pierced the gas film. The earlier study concerns impact and air-film dynamics; it is related context, not the same claim as the 2025 paper’s investigation of splash suppression.

Could this matter for printing or coatings?

Controlling whether an impact splashes could be relevant to processes such as inkjet printing, spray coating and other droplet-based technologies. The 2025 study provides a physical mechanism to investigate, not evidence that a commercial process has already improved. It does not establish industrial productivity, cost savings or performance gains.
